I figured I'd take the initiative and post up a thread for us to post our live reactions to the Gizmoplex premiere event for 1302-Robot Wars, set to air this Friday, April 1 at 8pm.
I'll make another thread for actual post-premiere episode discussion/reviews.

Feeling optimistic about this one. The riffing was good in the first episode. Hopefully it gets even better from there! The movie definitely seems like good riffing fodder. I think even a crew member said they kinda liked it.

And its only 72 minutes long, so minimal butchering of the movie itself.

Anything with both Barbara Crampton AND Lisa Rinna is a guaranteed good time.

They really advertised the hell out of Barbara Crampton for this episode. She better be getting all the best riffs, or all that hype would feel really misleading. Also, with Santo only showing 70 minutes of the movie, very little of Robot Wars should be cut down. Only 2 minutes, ideally.

I've adored Barbara Crampton for years, but I don't believe I've ever earmarked any performer on a movie for needing the 'best riffs' on MST3K beforehand and I don't think I'll start now. It seems like a rather arbitrary criteria. I also have not seen a ton of hype for any specific actor, outside of the initial teaser mentioning both their names.

Also, with Santo only showing 70 minutes of the movie, very little of Robot Wars should be cut down. Only 2 minutes, ideally. The hype wasn't about the potential riffs. She is a b movie sex icon. I am also active in the Joe Bob Briggs fan forums which got real active when he came back on Shudder. That actress has an insane following. I'm younger than most of them so I think Robot Wars might actually be the first movie I saw with her when I was really young.. When I joined that group I was kind of shocked by how often she was brought up and then when Joe Bob did one of her movies (which was terrible btw) the reaction was insane. Dudes swooning like mad and she was a guest on the show and they were STILL swooning for her at 63 years old. The Joe Bob audience (guys and girls alike) are not afraid to really talk up the sexual appeal of actors/actresses in the movies. They celebrate it as much as the gore, creature work, death scenes, one liners, villains, etc. It kind of all comes from her being in the cult classic Reanimator (and yes she gets naked in the movie). After that she became this b movie queen and in soo many films. The hype is the b movie crowd's adoration of her and finally getting one of her films on the show. For the record.. while I do think she is attractive and I love actors and actresses that just really love being b movie cult icons and really engage with those fans (like elvira, bruce campbell, felissa rose, etc).. I also don't quite understand it.. she has a very stoic personality and acting style and often times doesn't have ANY memorable lines.. I have a lot of other b movie / horror film actresses I would rank above her in those conversations. One of them was in Season 11 (lana clarkston).. She actually has personality in her films/roles. So I suggest lowering your expectations a bit. I don't recall her doing anything in Robot Wars that is gonna bring the great riffs.. the other actors/actresses are way more campy and easier to riff on. But I haven't seen this movie since I was a kid (watched it a ton of times in elementary school).

I've seen part of Robot Wars on a Rifftrax. I don't remember it being very memorable. It does have pretty cool better-than-B-movie-average miniatures and stop-motion, but the campiness kind of fell flat for me. The rifftrax guys must have been boring as well, I don't remember any riffs, and I think I only watched like half of it and never came back to it.
Speaking of B-movies, I've seen Reanimator and recently, and it is a pretty 'good' weird crazy fun 80s horror movie. I think it actually is more known for pushing Jeffrey Combs career, but yes, if you've seen the movie and seen Crampton's scenes, you can see how this movie alone probably started her cult following.
I actually doubt there'll be too many riffs directly about her other than a wink-wink reference as I think her whole cult following is based around her sex-appeal and the way she handles it on and off screen, and knowing how MST3K likes to keep it family friendly.

I'm not sure we needed a multi-paragraph treatise on why anyone has decided they don't like Barbara Crampton's personality, but that aside, yes, she's a cult icon in both genre film and soap operas and had a considerable resurgence in the last decade-plus due to her work with the elevated indie horror scene and films like Ti West's "You're Next," which led to a lot of higher-profile work for her. And yes, I do love both MST and Joe Bob Briggs.

Robot Wars is the Atlantic Rim of the 90s. I'm expecting some fans might not dig it for how self aware it is. and man I'm with ya.. Reanimator is so damn great.

I'm not really super into the B-movie verse, despite being a fan of MST3K. I'm guess I'm more of a casual fan than anything. I've also never watched Reanimator, though I really should at some point. Still, why hype her up if she "doesn't have ANY memorable lines..."? I'd feel like having someone relatively famous would make them a prime target for riffing. I mean in Space Travelers, Crow does Gregory Peck impersonations the whole movie. I just don't get it.

Well, how was I supposed to know all this? I didn't say you were sir... just giving some context. I've also never watched Reanimator, though I really should at some point. It's worth it.. trust me.Still, why hype her up if she "doesn't have ANY memorable lines..."? I'd feel like having someone relatively famous would make them a prime target for riffing. I mean in Space Travelers, Crow does Gregory Peck impersonations the whole movie. I just don't get it. because she has a big following.. doesn't matter what you and I think about her.. blame her fans.. MST3K is wise to showcase they are doing a barbara crampton movie. It brings in new people. What else are they gonna showcase? stop motion robots that are only on screen from a tiny fraction of the movie? That would be overhyping it.I mean Wizards of the lost kingdom II had David Carridine.. he didn't get 'the best riff'.. other characters (especially TYOR ) got the best riffs cause they were the most riffable characters.. what business sense would it make to hype up 'Tyor' played by an actor barely anyone knows vs 'Hey David Carridine is in this!'? You know what I mean.
Hope that helps explain it.

I guess that makes sense. It's not really smart to hype up someone that nobody knows about. And if they happen to be funny, then that just makes for a nice surprise. Now I've realized the true false advertising in this. If the robot battles take up so little time, why do they keep saying they're "endless"? I'm on to you, MST3K! You won't fool me twice.
