I love the Gizmoplex for the classic episodes and I am trying to warm up to season 13. Most of the time shorts don't get enough attention and season 13 has brought us some nice shorts. I know many have differing opinions on season 13, but what is your opinions of the shorts for season 13?
PIPELINE TO THE CLOUDS: Right now it's my favorite of the first three shorts. Yes, if you compare to the older episodes it is lazy, missing the mark, and the riffs are not over the top, and no homerun riffs, but it is the best so far. I am trying not to compare the new seasons with the older seasons because it isn't fair. This short gave me some chuckles and I have gone back to it a couple of time.
LET'S MAKE A MEAL IN 20 MINUTES: Oh Boy, if Mike Nelson was only here this would have been a rabble rousing episode, but yet again it is lackluster. It has its funny moments, but they are only short moments of a chuckle and not rip roaring laughter as in the past. I think they have a lot of work to do in the riff department. I found myself actually enjoying the short more with my own riffs in my head.
COURT CASE: Is the homerun that never was. In the past Mike Nelson and Joel would of shredded this short with just the word "Ball." You can tell they played it safe with this short and kept it sanitized. This is unfortunate since this could have been an all time classic, but instead an all time dud. This was Emily's worst outing, and Kelsey missed her mark every time. These are not off the cuff. They are scripted, and written weeks or months in advance. I think reshoots should have been in order. This episode had so much promise, and yet they played it safe to not offend. Offend who? Who cares, because if you want to be funny you have to not be afraid, and need to be bold and daring. This short was none of those. I hope the shorts get better.

I've only seen the first one, and didn't bother to tune into the events the next ones premiered on.
But judging from how little fanfare the 2nd and 3rd short got, I'm probably not missing much.
Edit: Looking at Mighty Jack's review, he seemed to like the third short most. His sense of humor seems to run parallel to mine, so I'll load it up later and take a look.

But generally...
Weren't the idea of 12 shorts supposed to be they are the filler material that was released between monthly episodes, so people stay engaged? Like, the SHORTS are supposed to be highlighted, right?
But as it is, they've just been tagged onto the beginnings of these nostalgia streams as a "...and featuring a new short" kind of thing. Makes me wonder how they present these going forwards. Because they're certainly not long enough to build an entire event around. Unless you were to combine 3 or more into 1 event.

It seems like it would make sense to combine shorts with viewer mail. That way it can be shorter, maybe half an hour total.

Watching the Ball short.
It's...ok. Its a very heavily narrated short, and we all know how hesitant they are to riff during talking, so the riffing is relatively light. I dunno. I smiled every time the narrator said "balls" and it had nothing to do with the riffing, and they certainly didn't run with it like they could've.
Pretty...ok. Better than the water short, but only just.
Side note: It had ELEVEN writers.

Shorts were filler when a movie wasn’t long enough, and now they just watch any random instructional video, at least rifftrax cranks them out like crazy while these were touted as a “STRETTTTTTCH GOOOOOAL”

Side note: It had ELEVEN writers. I think they had the same team just do all the shorts at once. Wasn't that they had 11 writers just on one short.

I think shorts work best before a movie. They're like an appetizer. To me, most of the MST3K shorts are also tied to the movie they riffed, and often one of the host segs would even go back to the short. For example, Circus on Ice is one of my favorite shorts ever ("The only consolation is that these people are all dead now"), but I don't watch it much cuz i don't watch Monster A Go-Go much. Conversely, that silly angel helping the guy write the piano jingle short, something about a Honeymoon, I see all the time (and like a good bit), cuz it starts off Night of the Bloodbeast which I love and watch most Thanksgivings (with the TDay skits, of course).
FF to today. Just a short is, well kind of short. I used to watch RiffTrax's, especially before they started the VOD movies, but nowadays most often not. What Frank and Trace are doing where they watch a group of them in a Night of Shorts is better, but still, you can get burnt out. It looks like they've developed a cycle where they riff two movies and then have a night of shorts. I think i would prefer less.
... or better yet, do one before the movie...

Each movie writing team also wrote for a short, with the exception of the Gamera team, because that movie was SO LONG. Matt or Tim dropped that info somewhere along the line, either in Kickstarter update or in the Discourse forum. So yeah, 11 writers for the tennis ball short.

you mean, 11 writers for a movie and the tennis ball short.
curiously Nate hasn't appeared on any of the movies writing credits so far, just all the shorts. Btw 14 writers on the water short. 10 writers on the 5 min cooking short.

Btw 14 writers on the water short. 10 writers on the 5 min cooking short. Money wasted on writers? It looks that way. We are starting to see the Kickstarter money dwindle on nonessentials. I can say this, and that is any two of us in this forum can write a short or even a full episode. No reason to have so many writers. It speaks volumes when they have so many writers and no hit riffs, just chuckles from the balcony.

The short was to fill for a short movie and it brought people back a bit to how they would watch movies at the local theater in the 1950's. Kids would spend a dime going to the movies and watch 2 cartoons, a serial, and a movie. That was the feel of the shorts in the original run.

Watching the short "Sleep for Health" I am embarrassed for Joel. Tragic short, but this season has been one big dumpster fire.
