I didn't even realize a new short was available. Was it attached to the Gamera event?

I was looking all over last weekend to find any comments about the new short I could and they are pretty scarce. Thank yous to Mighty Jack and Torgo from this board for writing the only reviews I could find - your work reviewing all the new content is greatly appreciated.
Reading their reviews, I think I can tell why there isn't much discussion about Sleep for Health.

Watching the short "Sleep for Health" I am embarrassed for Joel. Tragic short, but this season has been one big dumpster fire. Although I've watched some of the real eps, I have no plans to get the gizmomplex or watch any of this extra stuff (even though I love shorts -- as part of an actual ep). But I'm curious. Could you go into a little more detail about your thoughts on the short?

Could you go into a little more detail about your thoughts on the short? You weren't asking me, but I just re-watched it so... it's just dreadfully unfunny. The short is dull and gives them nothing to work with and the quips are not good. The first 1 minute was amusing, then it falls off a cliff (except for "what's a doorabit?" which got a smile from me). The high-def classic door sequence looks great though.

Is it a problem of bad short selection or bad riffing? Seems like a little of both, but I'd say the short selection is probably more important.

I’d blame the short first, just not much to work with. 🫤 Putting it before a powerhouse like Gamera vs Guiron doesn’t do it any favors either. I wish they could unlock the secret to consistency - we’re still on the roller coaster of funny highs and disappointing lows (and IMO I’m pretty even handed.)

I wish they could unlock the secret to consistency Well, when you have 30 writers and 3 different performing casts... I love almost all the old eps, even KTMA, but then in hindsight, looking back, I think that Trace Beaulieu, Josh Weinstein, Joel Hodgson, and then Kevin Murphy, Mike Nelson and Frank Coniff are all very funny talented people. The writing and acting group was small, tight, consistent and talented. You aren't going to beat that the way Joel is running things now, really ever.

I imagine it’s not particularly cost effective either

As someone who has been a staff and freelance writer, freelance writers are a bargain compared to staff writers. No benefits, no vacation days. I assume they were only paid for a brief, condensed period (maybe 3 months?). You even cut down on some of your accounting costs, since 1099 employees have to pay their own taxes, while the tax for staff employees are withheld from checks and paid by the company.
And a lot of the writers for the new MST3K have day jobs, so the job doesn’t have to be sustainable for them. Hell, I’d probably go below my quoted rate if offered a chance to write for my favorite show.

And a lot of the writers for the new MST3K have day jobs ... If I remember from the first kickstarter, most all of the writers were friends/colleagues/fans of Joel, so who knows if any writers other than the writer/performers like Jonah, are actually full time. Also, if still true, this would be another factor in wildly inconsistent riffing.
