I struggle with things like Fungicide and Baby Ghost at Rifftrax, those types. And I've been trying to figure out why, I mean wasn't Manos no budget and amateuristic too? But maybe it's the film stock, maybe it's that it was difficult to make a movie back then, even low-budget baddies still took money and a lot of effort, just to process the thing. And the Manos types, the Red Zone Cuba's, at least feel like a real movie. Poorly made, sure, but real. Baby Ghost is like something your nephew made during spring break with his phone. And I just don't enjoy those (and have stopped buying them) BTW, Rifftrax did Suburban Sasquatch. as much as I can't stand Red zone cuba it's not unwatchable like Fungicide. I'm with you there. Demon Squad doesn't look unwatchable to me.

Other members wonder where everyone is regarding discussing this new season. I think many gave up on this season and moved to other things. I know this thread was late as well. For me, this was a dumpster fire. There is one home run riff, the first of the season. "Eyes Cube" - Joel. That was the one highlight. I ended up falling asleep forty minutes in because of the all-usual mishaps of late timing on riffs, bad script, and the annoying Emily Crow. Tonight I enjoyed a little Sinister Urge and it reminds me of the good times of MST3K where riffs meant something. This new season is missing seasoned riffers, and they tip toe around riffing so they don't trigger a sensitive watcher. I was looking forward to Joel and I was happy to see him, but you can tell he was rusty but far better than his counterparts. I say pull the plug on this season and go back to the planning room of what needs to be done to bring the show back to greatness. I do like the sets because it reminds me of the early days, and I like that cheese. I do enjoy Felicia Day, but I have always had a soft spot for her.

We're all over at Mystery Science Discourse 3000, where most are enjoying the new season. If you think this place is a graveyard, check out Satellite News! Virtually flat-lined. I've had issues with the new season, and I definitely understand why some would not like it (hate it, even). I've decided to withhold judgement until the season is done, and I watched it through a few times. I need to see how it holds together as a whole. So far, each episode has been fairly different, which is consistent with the program.

Mike isn't coming back.

I haven't seen any of this one and don't know if I will. Joel is my favorite, but I'm also mad at Joel the producer.
Also, I'm totally in with all of your views on new Z-budget movies. I love Best of the Worst. But, it's its own thing where you are more watching them talk about the movie than watching it. And, as film guys, they often get into quasi-serious discussions of what was technically wrong with the movie and how they'd fix it. RLM actually is pretty um, un-mean-spirited I guess, to the movies they watch as a whole, often discussing why they think things went wrong as they did while still laughing at it all. It's one of the main reasons I like them--they have fun with the movies they watch. ... Anywoo, with MST3K, you are watching the movie. To show where my level is, forget this dumb 'movie', I have a hard time with movies like Future War or Hobgoblins. In my memory Future War always sounds so fun with the plot and the forced perspective puppets and the silly "action" scenes, and there are many parts I like, but like when they're in the apartment "having a discussion", ugh, it is so bad and amateurish, you can just feel that it is 3 'actors' in a room awkwardly saying things in front of a rolling camera.

I think many gave up on this season and moved to other things. This describes me. In fact, I haven't watched any of the new season. It doesn't sound like something I'd enjoy. I might watch an episode or two at a later date, but I'm in no hurry.

So far, each episode has been fairly different, which is consistent with the program. Speaking for myself, I’ve stopped talking about the new season here so much because of a few members being overly critical about it and I’d prefer to talk positively about it rather than argue or ignore negative discussion (I’ve made this approach to all entertainment recently so it’s not a MST3K specific thing). I’ll also admit that I usually would one two punch a visit to MST3K Info and here, and the fact that they’ve just given up on covering A NEW SEASON but still tell us about Rifftrax (in the most half assed way) led me to visiting Info less and in turn this forum less. The official forum is almost too active for my liking, but it is fun to ask current staff questions and have them usually reply. Once more of 13 airs I’ll probably be a bit more active here. But I don’t see this forum as a gauge for the season’s success.

Yeah, this board has some unfortunate "echo chamber" aspects when certain topics come up.

Yeah, this board has some unfortunate "echo chamber" aspects when certain topics come up. "echo chamber" aspects? "Echo Chambers" on the Internet are times and places when certain groups will reach a kind of consensus about certain topics and then whenever they come up people just sort of recite the standard opinion again. Sometimes that can make it harder for people with different points of view or fresh takes on things to be heard (and is why a lot of online groups will start to feel like the makers of their favorite games or TV shows aren't listening to their "common sense" suggestions because, well, corners of the Internet aren't always as universal as they can feel.) In general, this message board is a *lot* better about that kind of thing than, say, Reddit or most Twitter subcultures, but it still crops up from time to time.

Some very belated thoughts, since it was a looong month or two for me and I only got to this not long ago: Pretty solid ep. Not reaching quite the heights of Atlantis or Munchie but a strong return for Joel to the game and good riffing from all. The pure strangeness and dead air of the post-millennial DIY/bargain basement format works against our gang a bit, which is another reason I never loved Atlantic Rim or when RT does this kind of stuff, but the sheer insanity of the puppet monsters and some ridiculous performances, as well as the enthusiastic (and very bad) script, keeps the energy up onscreen and off and the riffs are good work. Like I said before viewing, if a very low-rent movie has a sense of purpose and some intellect behind it, like Time Chasers or Overdrawn at the Memory Bank, it's more likely to be lively enough to watch and enjoy either riffed or unriffed vs. truly lifeless gutterball trash (which describes a lot of the RT stuff in this subgenre, IMO). So this is easily a rewatchable one.
I got the vibe that Joel was on the SoL willingly in the future, but who knows? Lovely to see how this iteration of the bots interacted with him like a beloved uncle/elder; they're a couple generations removed from the originals, so he isn't quite Daddy. And intriguing to see Pearl being threaded in more and more.

And intriguing to see Pearl being threaded in more and more. I think that's oddly good for his character. Joel was always the host who sort of had a foot in both the reality of the show and also in the reality of the "tv show production" aspect of things. He was the "host" of the show, and the narrative was just how his position in it was framed, as opposed to most later hosts having more of a "I'm actually trapped in space, help" feeling to them, even when they were able to engage with the audience in a host-like capacity. For Joel to come back and be like "Oh, bad movies? Yeah, okay, sure, let's do this" feels very on-brand for him. (Wanna say this is speculative: I've not really had Internet at home for several months now, so I've not been able to watch any of the new episodes yet. Looking forward to a marathon sometime in Autumn, hopefully)
