More like physical set for the hosts and then all the other stuff is digital. All the scenes with them on the moon, in the gizmoplex, etc.
You know you would complain.
The underlaying theme of “it’s different than it was thirty years ago and I don’t like change” is consistent, at least.
Same crowd that used to hate Mike, now it’s something different to gripe about.

No I'm fairly certain I wouldn't care. But good job of moving the goal posts from talking about the crappy cgi SOL set to something else entirely.
And while we're throwing around broad caricatures of fans, I'm sure if that were the case in this ever-more-hypothetical situation, the boot-kissing, "I'll accept any old tripe as long as the brand name is slapped on it" sycophants would rush to defend whatever, wherever, whenever. Because it is brand, I know brand, brand good. And clap like the brainless seals they are.
But again we've gotten into extreme hypothetical, hyperbole territory. And it doesn't change the fact that the CGI sets in season 13 look like crap and they need to build real ones. Simple as that.

I agree that The Mad's base doesn't look great compared to the awesome Moon 13, but the SOL set doesn't look significantly different from Seasons 11-12 to me.

I think this may be in the eye of the beholder, but I could tell right away that it was "off," being very flat and fuzzy. It reminded me of a painted backdrop stage curtain. I believed it was just a picture of the Netflix set that was out of focus for Artistic Reasons, then when I found out it actually was a painting because of the Deal with Satan, er, Netflix, I was...well, surprised isn't the correct word. I wasn't impressed with the Netflix SOL set to start with because I felt it was visually dull and lacked depth, but compared to Season 13 it looks great. I'm pretty disinvested in what happens in the future, but I think it would be a big mistake to not have a physical SOL set at the very least going forward. Glue actual stuff on a few pieces of plywood or foamboard that you can transport, set up, and break down easily and that will fit into a small space like was done at KTMA. It will make a huge difference visually to have actual depth of field.

Wow, MST3Kinfo did an episode guide post for Santo & The Treasure of Dracula, and tonight's Mads show!
So it's not just an obituary site for riffed actors?

I almost made it "obituaries and Rifftrax posts." It's just seemed odd that what was once the primary MST3K site mostly ignores 2/3s of the riffing projects from Best Brains alums.

I may be a salty old curmudgeon that seemingly hates anything new, but the guy that runs MST3KInfo, Sampo, could out-grump me any day of the week. Met him briefly at the MSTie meetup at the old Best Brains Studio during the Anniversary Reunion. Not...very friendly. Not very enthusiastic for the new stuff. It doesn't surprise me at all of it he doesn't talk about nu-MST much at all.

I'm late - only 2.5 episodes in thanks to Pluto TV now carrying the season. Early thoughts:
Riffing is a little better than Netflix seasons. Same quality of writing, but better pacing. Jonah and company are more comfortable. Decent. Not as good as the classics, but I laugh reasonably often. It's really odd that the bots don't bring up the OTHER El Santo movie where he fights vampires though.
Emily - too early to pass judgement. She seems okay, but I'm not sure if the multiple hosts gimmick is a good idea. Her Servo sounds too much like Jonah, this hurts my brain. I'm okay with a lady Crow. There's even an ancient host segment (KTMA?) where Joel claimed the "W" in "Crow" stood for "woman". But the other three Crows all sounded similar to each other, the new one seems more like a Muppet voice or something.
Host segments suck so far. Kinga and Max have no chemistry (are they even in the same room, or are they green screened separately?). Kinga's just the worst elements of Pearl without the funny parts. Max is still nothing like Frank. I like Patton in other things, but his talents are wasted here. Why is the Gizmoplex's investor some kind of supervillain? Isn't he kind of a meta-contextual stand-in for the Kickstarter backers? I'm probably reading way too much into this, but that feels mean-spirited to me.
Production value is awful. The KTMA and Season 1 episode sets/exteriors/door sequence looked better. I am unreasonably upset that Servo's dome is no longer transparent.
The riffing is what matters most and they are doing a decent enough job of it so far. At least they didn't lose sight of that.
All in all, I am having a good time so far, but I'm glad I didn't shell out the $130 for Gizmoplex.

Then again, in-universe, anybody who paid for more experiments would come across as evil to the test subjects. So, I guess that makes sense.
And yeah, I know it's silly to be overly invested in the aesthetic of a robot puppet. But at the same time, if R2-D2 got repainted red, that might result in a similar sentiment?

Well, I'm more than halfway through now. My feelings haven't changed that much. Maybe one out of every ten host segments is kinda funny. Riffing is solid but not up to the legendary years. I noticed they stopped doing sight gags in the theater like in the Netflix seasons. Cost-cutting, I guess? I can live without them. Jonah and company are much more comfortable, I guess those live shows helped. Emily and her crew are worthy, on par with the others. The mads... still turning up nothing for me. It's nice to see Pearl every now and again, though. I was a little confused why she and Joel met for the first time, but I went back and checked - they never interacted in Soultaker. Weird. Speaking of lost opportunities. Let me get this straight. They got Joel and Josh back in the theater together for the first time since 1990... and it wasn't for Gamera?! They did all of them together in KTMA. Joel did them all again a second time. What were they thinking? That said, Jonah did a fine job, that was the best episode of the season thus far. And Demon Squad is a solid second. Also - is it weird that they keep mentioning Mike? It makes sense from a story perspective, he's the only test subject left unaccounted for. But since the real Mike is in no hurry to reprise his role, it almost feels like making a false promise.
I've enjoyed all of the episodes, but I don't think I'd ever care for a second viewing for any of them.

Twelve down, one to go. I will have thoughts to unpack on the season as a whole.
But The Bubble. Holy crap, The Bubble. Now that's an episode. That movie... not since Carnival Magic have I been so overwhelmed with a sense of "what IS this?"
The most frustrating thing about it is that it keeps almost being good. It was one re-write away from being a decent Twilight Zone episode.
That ending. That ending. That ending!
I love Kung Fu movies. Shaw Brothers movies from the 1970s included. And even by that standard, The Bubble has the most awkward, abrupt, and unsatisfying ending to perhaps any movie I have ever seen. It's the kind of resolution that would be played for laughs in a Futurama story. I am awestruck.
Every season probably has at least one new classic episode. This is it.
The Dick Clark joke was in really poor taste, though. I wouldn't put that past Rifftrax, but that really didn't sound right coming out of Joel's mouth.
