Episode and the number of replies to it's discussion thread in this forum. (I was bored) A few notes-- popularity doesn't mean like or dislike. It could be any discussion, good or bad. Also, remember seasons 11 and 12 were both bulk dumped, so their spreads might have more correlation to popularity. season 13 has been week to week, so obviously beginning of a new season will have much more discussion. Season 13 appears to be more popular overall, but I think it's the week by week thing again. I've always held the opinion that Netflix is stoopid for doing bulk dumps of new big shows like stranger things that would generate buzz with each new ep each week.

I don't think you can compare live-watch-party threads (Season 13) to review-style threads (Seasons 11-12). One is basically a chatroom, while the other is for long-form discussion.
That said, I think spacing out the episodes is much better for audience engagement and for the fan community. I hope they keep it up, because it really feels like MST3k is back now that people have a new episode to discuss every few weeks. I don't know if Netflix's binge release model actually hurt the show, but I don't think it helped. And I say that as someone who generally liked the Netflix seasons.

Yeah, I agree, the data is still fun to look at, but probably more of a comparison of eps within a season, and also how season 13 is flowing.

Demon Squad has a pretty low post count despite being the return of Joel

Heh, I love this, actually. Might not be the most rigorously scientific given the differences in how, when, and why we talked about some of those episodes, but I think the data's telling even with that kind of thing in mind.

Bulk dumping is because people forget about shows, and don't go back to them. We remember, but most don't.

Bulk dumping is because people forget about shows, and don't go back to them. We remember, but most don't. Maybe for some mediocre shows, but not shows like Stranger Things, the Marvel shows when they were hot, etc. Other services have seen this. Many shows on Amazon have gone back to 1 a week, like The Boys. I also think Disney+ is doing 1 a week shows.

Bulk dumping is because people forget about shows, and don't go back to them. We remember, but most don't. I'd never heard that before, but I can see how it would be true in the early days of streaming when there were no ads and streaming homepages were poorly curated. Now, though, people get lambasted with bright and gaudy welcome screens every time they log into a streaming service reminding them to watch their favorite show's new episode. And they're more tuned in to social media, so they get reminders that way too. Timed releases don't have the drawbacks that they used to have.

Timed releases don't have the drawbacks that they used to have. They've had "timed releases" for like 50+ years. There's no hard reason why a whole season of Cheers couldn't have been released in like a week, 3 eps a night, or something. They actually used to do this occasionally with a "mini-series" that aired like in 3 parts over three nights. But for the most parts shows had 1 season a year, 1 show a week. Sometimes I really miss that. For example, Friday night was new Stargate and Farscape. You would plan your night around it. And then you had a week to talk about the eps with friends, and anticipate more the next week.

Yeah, I dig the Disney+ model of releasing shows weekly. I honestly think that's part of why Mandalorian, some of the better Marvel shows, and now Andor are thriving in the cultural conversation--the conversation lasts for 6-10 weeks instead of 2, tops, for shows folks binge. And it *is* fun talking about this stuff. It was a blast talking with friends about Better Call Saul each week between episodes. Same with Reservation Dogs on Hulu/(FX?). And don't even get me started on the joys of watching For All Mankind weekly--that show runs on suspense, and the way time passes on that show is perfect for the weekly model
Basically, at this point, I think Netflix is one of the only services that primarily employs the binge model, and even they seem to be wavering a little...

Basically, at this point, I think Netflix is one of the only services that primarily employs the binge model, and even they seem to be wavering a little... They are. Timed releases for both Guillermo del Toro's horror anthology Cabinet of Curiosities and the new season of Unsolved Mysteries have really worked out for those shows. Bingeing is tired and so is Netflix's forced metrics for it. As for the topic, it's worth noting that people really aren't coming here to discuss S13 much at this point as it happens. The bulk of fan discussion appears to be on the main forum and the MST3K subreddit.

I can see that. Are most of you guys doing that? I don't really go to those sites, but then I'm not much watching S13. The only guy I really see that does lots of watching and posting here is Diet Kolos, and he hasn't been posting much, although I think he mentioned having some hurricane issues.

This is the only MST3k site I go to besides the occasional look-in at MST3kinfo. I know there are more active communities out there, but I'm a Web 1.0 kind of guy and all forms of social media get a hard pass from me.
