Last night I was showing my wife some of the funnier moments in Gamera vs Guiron. Anyway, I was surprised when they cut to Corn-job and without hesitation she says, "Kon Omura!" I reply something about, what you know this guy? "Oh yeah," she says, "Kon-chan." Seems he was a fairly popular comic back then, and I gather pretty funny if you're Japanese. That mysterious moment of his glasses slipping down was his trademark; it got a pretty good laugh from her. She says he stayed in the public eye for some years doing commercials for a brand of seaweed jelly. Who'd have thought he was that movie's star power?
Anyway, my vid-capping rig is stored away like Crow's good arms. If someone would be nice enough to get me a nice clean one of him in his full cop rig I'd appreciate it.
As for Akio's fascination with traffic accidents, when we went to temple on New Year's Day there was a special alcove where you pray for protection from same. I guess statistically it is the biggest danger most of us face . . . aside from monster scat.
Oh, and sorry about clogging up the other threads. I'll run down to the police box and have Corn-job shave my head.

What about a Jet jaguar appreciation thread? Can your wife explain the pants in those movies? Or the omnipotent children who run the government? Why doesn't Johnny care?

Feh, Jet Jaguar was nothing but an Ultraman wannabe. He works as a busboy in a revolving sushi shop these days!
Actually, I have heard the little pants explained as a way to toughen kids up during the Winter.
Johnny's indifference remains a mystery, however.

Oh, I know about them! I just love the site's _name_, for starters. :) I think I used one of their screenshots of Gamera when I was making my collage picture to go with my "B-Movie Story", years ago. As for a picture of Cornjob in his police regalia...let me go check my cop(ies) of Gamera Vs. Guiron and see what I can do. I like making screenshots. Edit: A nice-ish closeup of "Cornjob", cropped out carefully... i28.photobucket.com/albums/c218/Cleolanta42/konchan.jpgAnd one of him in a full screenshot complete with Tom's mother left in this time. I wasn't sure what kind of a picture you wanted--close up or long-shot, so I did both. i28.photobucket.com/albums/c218/Cleolanta42/konchan2.jpgBoth are from my copy of the KTMA version, which as you can see isn't all that bad. A smidge dark, but I fixed that with the gamma correction function on InfranView. I went with the earlier version of the episode because the Shadowrama is so much smaller--and therefore can be cropped out without losing anywhere near as much of the picture underneath. Now, if you want an _avatar_ made of Cornjob here, just ask and I'll resize and crop one of these pictures down properly to work for that, too. No big. I make avatars for people all the time, at the other forum I go to. ...Notorious

Thanks, Cleo! I can take care of the resizing myself though . . . rumors continue to circulate that my portrait in "Who Are Youuuuu!" may have been altered.
On the other hand, the more I look at what I have now the more I like how it goes with my tag-line.

...She says he stayed in the public eye for some years doing commercials for a brand of seaweed jelly... I had no idea the Japanese used jelly on seaweed!

Well, Sky, I have been known to make stuff up, but that one's legit. You know nori, the black seaweed that sushi's wrapped in? They make it into a black jelly that you spread over rice. Looks a little odd the first time you see it but it's delicious.
Hey, do you think Corn-job would give you a bum steer?

I once had dried, roasted, and spiced seaweed (aka "teriyaki nori"). It was surprisingly good.
...I realise that isn't really _important_, I just felt like adding that to the conversation. :P

So Corn Job is the Japanese equivalent to the nerdy guy with the glasses that kept falling in the water in Catalina Caper.

Except Kon-chan was probably humorous without the horrible dubbing. Fingers O'Toole was never funny.
I wish I coulda seen some Omura when I was in Japan. Zannen desu ne.

本当にざんねん、スキップ君。いつ日本に行った?
Fear not, nothing dirty there.
Chuck, you're confabulating Fingers and Crayola Head, neither of whom is funny in any language.
There IS a lot of humor that just doesn't want to translate. I tried showing my wife MST3k: The Movie and even subtitled it didn't really work. I haven't personally seen any more of the Corn-job canon, but according to the IMDB he did a TV drama as recently as '03. Watching that scene of him and Tom's mother I get the feeling she's supposed to be a send-up of Americans in Japan. There is a stereotype that we come over and lecture them about how everything they do is wrong (sadly, sometimes there's a basis for that perception). Properly done, a white lady reading the riot act to a Japanese cop could be pretty funny.
But I dunno . . . this IS a Gamera movie we're talking about.
