Well, if those comments Joel Hodgson made about a new crowdfunding campaign to record the MST3k Live show movies in the studio for release materialize, maybe more of those KTMA episodes will be offered as rewards, just like the first 2 episodes from the last Kickstarter. My support would be automatic if they did. But it seems like the KTMA eps would warrant elevated treatment. Don't get me wrong.....I certainly wouldn't complain. But the rewards seem like an afterthought and the KTMA episodes would have to be licensed and they have the potential to bring in a substantial stream of revenue for Shout. Probably the only one standing in the way at this point is Joel. But I'm a little surprised and disappointed that he wouldn't want such an important part of his legacy presented in the best possible condition. I'm grateful for the VHS rips but it's sad to think that these bootleg versions will be the best quality available that we'll ever see.

I think releasing the KTMAs digitally on the Shout Factory website would be fine enough. No need to worry about DVD sales there. I just don't get why they seem to be so against releasing them. I get that they're rough, but they're arguably the most important part of the show's history. They don't need to have a fancy box set or anything like that. Just having the episodes in their best quality would be more than acceptable.

I don't think Shout is against releasing them on issues of entertainment standards, which are purely subjective. Joel is probably the lone holdout on that specific reason. Shout made a big financial investment and have a profit motive to squeeze every last cent out of the property as they can. If licensing rights are not an issue then the only reason I could see them being gun shy would be advanced tape degradation.

would it be funny if we get the two Godzilla films before the Hart films and the one Wade film he like. More than funny, it would be a miracle. We won't be seeing either episode as long as the films are under copyright to Toho. We'll have to wait for the copyright protection to expire, and by that point who knows what home media and MST3K look like. I have a feeling that we'll see the Nicholson package and RXM not so long after the current respective copyright holders shuffle off this mortal coil. The Godzillas will eventually be the only officially unreleased MST episodes.

One question to raise at this point is: how long do videotapes last, anyway?
Celluloid deteriorates over time, which is why film archivists are always rushing to preserve old movies, and some films don't even exist anymore. Professional video is its own separate animal, but I'm wondering if there's a shelf life there as well.
If we wait too long, will masters for the old episodes eventually go ptttthhh!?

If stored properly and not played often, magnetic videotape of the kind used in VHS's and D2's can last a very long time. The commonly cited "will degrade 10-25% within the first 10-15 years" is crap. It's just not true. Yes, you may get some pops and lines and dropout from a rarely used VHS, but the picture quality should be about the same well up to 30 years out. And probably well beyond that. Most issues people have with VHS tapes is on the VCR side. They do need to be maintained, especially if they sit idle awhile. I'll give you an example. mylungswereaching sent me his 1991 tapes awhile ago. The tapes from April 1991 look and play better than some of mine from the early 00's, simply because he didn't play them into the ground like I had. Now, as far as I know, the D2 master tapes use roughly the same tech as a standard VHS, with a slightly different magnetic tape type. But if stored properly in the correct environment with temperature and humidity controls, they should last for another few decades. That doesn't mean Shout shouldn't have digitized them all by now. They definitely should have. But that's another story.

^ Since all of the unreleased episodes' host segments have been released, we can probably assume that Shout has digitized the entire episodes. They've also uploaded theater clips from a couple of these to YouTube -- it would be far less practical to have digitized only short portions of those tapes rather than the whole thing. I'd wager that they've digitized all but (some of) the KTMA stuff by now.
On a similar note, I vaguely recall that Jim Mallon had digitized a lot of the then-unavailable episodes (towards the end of Best Brains' ownership), so I wonder if those digital versions were passed along to Shout.

Mallon did indeed have the entire series digitized over a decade ago. Since Shout bought the series from him, he is legally required to give them all master copies.

Soooo..... by next year, assuming all the Paramount titles are clear and with the recent news of Delta Knights, do y’all think it’s possible we might get a volume 40 like this?
Fire Maidens from Outer Space The Deadly Bees The Space Children Quest of the Delta Knights?

Shout is on a hot streak with Paramount licensing now, so the door is open.

I definitely think it's possible. All we can do is hope.

Since they have Delta Knights (and since they probably negotiated video rights too), it's a safe bet they want to release it on disc as soon as possible. It's probably another safe assumption that they're holding onto it with the idea that they can/might get any number of those Paramount titles within the next year, otherwise we'd probably have heard news of a Delta Knights solo already.
This is assuming what we know about the approx. end of Olive's lease is accurate.

I have also been curious to know what the status of XM and the Hart titles will be once Wade and Susan both pass on (and by no means am I rooting for their deaths for the sake of getting these on home media, regardless if I may disagree with their business decisions). Like, do you think both or one or the other will have the next estate continue the same deal when they’re handed over? I imagine Wade might possibly do that knowing how protective he is with XM, but who knows about Hart.

The actions of any heir is unpredictable and something I'm not concerned about. I'd keep my eye closer to public domain laws, which will take decades but be more effective.
