There is nothing keeping Jim Mallon from releasing all the host segments from the pilot and the first three episodes. Nothing except for shame apparently. I'd still give almost anything to see them on that updated MST Scrapbook DVD I've been begging for. At least that would be something.

They were the D-2 masters. He transferred them straight to DVD for me from the masters themselves. Wow. I already have all the season seven DAP releases, but I might just have to get ahold of your copies too. I doubt Rhino will ever get around to them.

What I do not understand is that if Mallon does have episodes K00-K03, why is he keeping them to himself? I know those episodes cannot be released commercially like any other KTMA episodes. But, fans have access to episodes K04-K21 through tape trading. Couldn't Mallon just put the tapes into circulation like K04-K21? It sure would make a lot of MSTies happy.

I do not know why he would think that. Someone should tell him that he is obviously wrong. If those episodes were that bad, then KTMA would have canceled the show much earlier. They must have been appealing to some people because on K04, they already had people calling in telling them how much they like the show. What I'm really interested in seeing is the early history of the show.

Jim knows that we, the MSTies will not look down on them if we see the KTMA episodes. Although to be frank, I certainly wouldn't use any of those shows as a way to "convert" someone to MST3K.
I think Jim is more afraid of getting caught for copyright infringement (of the films). Maybe he thinks we're a sting operation. Who knows? I'm rambling here of coarse.

That's the way it used to be. At this point, either (A) he is embarrassed by the low, low production quality, (B) he doesn't want to go through the trouble of securing the rights to release something that only the hardcore fans will be able to appreciate, (C) the episodes no longer exist, or (D) the quality of the tapes is so bad that Jim (or Rhino) can't justify releasing them to the public.

Remember, all of what we say is speculation, but I believe the reason Mallon has not released the first three episodes and pilot is there is no legal way to do it unless it's free. Jim possibly just doesn't want to go to the effort, or doesn't think that MSTies have a demand.
It's been reported (somewhere) before that all the KTMAs are in Mallon's possession. I doubt that he'd destroy the copies, or let them deteriorate, as he has to know there is some value in them. Hell, 93 years after they made those movies, Mallon can release the episodes. Only about 70 years to go.

Copyright is the reason, not some level of embarresment, the movies that are featured are from sources difficult to negotiate with and if they were released it would be obvious that it was Mallon meaning he'd be sued so you can't blame him. Sorry if that rambled but Glasgow Rangers beat Celtic today and I've been drinkin since 12pm British time and it's now nearly 1.30 am! Ha ha!

I just received a response from one of the people there. Here is the email the person sent me:
Brandon,
I work at channel 23 in St. Paul, and worked with Joel and the gang from MST when it was here. Unfortunately, KTMA went bankrupt many years ago and let a lot of people go. The MST group left and took all of the shows with them, and we do not have any copies.
Good luck on your search. If you find them let me know, I think we still own the copyrights. -- Tom Lynch Asst. Promotion Director WUCW The CW Twin Cities
The email he sent also included his phone number, but I opted not to post since, if I recall posting phone numbers here w/out permission isn't allowed.
Still it's good to know we can scratch the theory that CW has any copies. Which brings us back to Jim Mallon.

And since Jim can't legally release them, we're right back to square one...
Say, has that new show "The Knights of Prosperity" given anyone else an idea?

Good job, getting some actual answers, Xerxes. At least we know where those episodes stand. Let's just hope that Jim doesn't say, "But I thought THEY had the episodes. Oops."
