Best thread ever. Worst episode I've seen yet. I don't even like the host segments.

Apart from great Host Segments (You ARE Magic, Aren't You Trumpy?! is right up there in the random stakes with Mexican Kids Show from parts: the clonus horror), the riffing just seemed dead. Although I think Trace's "Potato Trumpy" voice is one of the funniest things the show's ever done - "Like hell, more food..." - I rarely laughed at this ep. Anyone else notice how depressing this film is? The sad ending where Trumpy has to leave actually made me feel upset, and ignore the riffing completely. The ending Host Segment song was really touching, too. However, there is one awesome thing I liked about this ep, though - during the Trumpy's Magic Host Segment where everything flies around, take a close look at the flying clothes - on the end is Joel's old beige KTMA jumpsuit! ^ What's THAT, then? ^ HUZZAH! If the pic's a bit small for you to see, click on it for a larger (albeit still a tad blurry, but clear enough) image, or see it in action at www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJ3tgzjBUiI at 2:18. One of... if not the most popular episode of all-time, and it probably won over more fans than any other episode--even Manos. I'm sure Manos introduced more people to MST, but I doubt it won over as many as Pod People. The former being so creepy and the latter so, in my opinion, positive and upbeat. (Caaaaaall me/ Call me and tell me you loooooooove me....) I'm frequently amazed when I see people judging or critiquing or even grading an episode after only 1 or 2 viewings. I always figured that if I loved an episode right away it was just a bonus. At some point every episode will be the exact episode I'm in the mood for. Every Red Zone Cuba will have its day. No matter how much you hate Pod People, it's VERY true it got a lot of people hooked on MST3K. And THAT can't be faulted. Safe to say a large number of MSTies wouldn't be here if not for this episode. Something tells me it would've worked better as a Sci-Fi episode, though.

Pod People is probably my favorite Joel episode. Even the dissenters seem to agree that the host segments are great, so I guess it's about the riffing. Personally, I find Pod People to have some huge laughs, and it includes my all-time favorite Joel series of riffs about Smuckers - that still gets me every time. And all the Ren Fair jokes, of course the famous trumpy/potato scene, etc. And I think they're treatment of the truly strange cast of characters is excellent, from the extremely creepy boy and his odd guardians to "it stinks" guy and his main girlfriend, and his slutty girlfriend, and so forth. I dunno, the movie is the perfect fodder, and I think they set it on fire So, Huzzah!

Oh, man. Pod People is just funny all-around for me. The "It Stinks!" intermission sketch, the riffing, the cheesy horror movie, the credits sequence footage that has NOTHING to do with the movie (like in Cave Dwellers): it all adds up to hilarity for me.
My friends and I love horror movies, and Pod People's attempt at horror had us rolling.
"See, cheating is hip." "Yeah, enjoy being used."
"Wow, if you keep eating like that, you will grow big and strong. Then we can play! Do you know what playing is, Trumpy?" "Yes, it's where I break you in half."
Hysterical.

I like it better than most of the episodes from that era.

One of my favorite riffs of Season 3 I'm a tad surprised no-one else is mentioning the KTMA jumpsuit.

I think it's a very good episode, though I need to be in the right mood to watch it. Otherwise, my attention starts to wander due to the movie's sluggish pace and the laid-back (and sometimes repetitive) riffing, even though the potato scene is one of my favorite MST3K moments.

I love Pod People. It was the first episode with Joel I saw. The riffing's great, the host segments are great, and the kid's horribly dubbed voice is a source of much amusement.

Hmmm...seeing all the positive votes it's getting, maybe I just wasn't in the right frame of mnd to watch the ep. I'll give it another try sometime.

I think the reason "Pod People" is considered such a fan favorite is because, at the time it aired, no other episode had such a heavy concentration of riffs. It was with this episode that the Brains really established how many jokes they can pack into an episode, and for that, it is rather significant. Since then, though, the humor of the show got sharper and faster, so "Pod People" seems almost weak compared to later landmark episodes like "Manos: The Hands of Fate" or "Mitchell".

[glow=red,2,300]The first ep I ever saw.[/glow] I still love it. "Hi, we're the cast of Straw Dogs!" If I had a penny for every time I heard someone say that, I might be able to buy a small can of Coca-Cola.

Not overrated at all. This is one of the great episodes in the run of the show. Saying that you have a hard time liking it because the show got faster paced in later years is like saying that you can't enjoy Rubber Soul because it's not as densely packed as The White Album.
"Don't worry, she'll be all right. With a good night's rest she'll be as right as rain in the morning." "Yeah, that's what cures a crushed spine!"
"Hey wait, those aren't deer!" "Well, let's shoot 'em. They're not wearing orange."
