Due to the fact that I am a diehard Mystery Science Theater 3000 fan, and due to the fact that I would like to start a band, I'm thinking of doing a MST3K music video. I've been thinking about doing this for several weeks now, and I'm writing this to get your opinions on whether or not the plot of the video sounds like it could be good. I'm not trying to create another "Thriller" here. I'm just creating a video and a song based on my all time favorite T.V. Show.
The video would be actually be a short film that would run about 8-10 minutes long. The plot would be this: The lead singer of an up and coming band, played by myself, dreams that he is late for his band's concert. In the dream, along the way to the club, the lead singer keeps running into characters that are seen in movies riffed on Mystery Science Theater 3000. He gets into a car that's being driven by Rowsdower. He fights the Neptune Men wearing Space Cheif's costume. He falls into a cave and gets chased by Egah. He tries to hide in a shed, but is chased out by Torgo. He meets Mr. B Natural under a bridge. He trips over Puma Man's costume, put it on, and tries to fly to the concert. The lead singer gets into a fight with Joe Don Baker. I'm even thinking of doing a scene where the lead singer rides the back of Gamera straight to the concert. I'm not sure I'll be using all of these ideas. I'm still tossing ideas in my head. I want to make sure that I cram enough MST3K'd characters into the 8-10 music video, but not too much.
Also, there is a slight challenge for the lead singer. Each time it seems like the lead singer is about to head to the club, he gets attacked by a MST3K'd villian (Torgo, Krankor, The Neptune Men), and has to redo the trip all over again. So it's the movie Groundhog's Day meets MST3K when you think about it.
I'm also thinking of adding some Wizard of Oz into it, in that it turns out that some of the MST3K characters are infact members of the band. Like the drummer could be Torgo. The guitarist could be Rowsdower. The keyboardist could be Joe Don Baker. I may create some morphing effects (if it's not hard to do), where you, the viewer, would see the band member morph from character to band member. I plan on perfoming wearing a blue jumpsuit a'la Mike Nelson.
The song that would be in the video is a song I plan on recording if I am able to shell out a few bucks to record in a recording studio (or if I find some other method). The band I plan on forming will be a mix of different musical genres. Rock. Rap. Funk. Pop. The song in the video will be a light hearted rap song based on a light hearted rap song called "Mr. Jinx" by Quarashi. I chose this song for several reasons.
1.) I can't sing at all
2.) There has never been a rap song about Mystery Science Theater 3000.
3.) The song "Mr. Jinx", which is the song that gave me the inspiration to do this, is a light hearted, catchy little number with a very nice beat, and silly lyrics. After hearing the song several times, I decided the beat would be music would be perfect for a song about MST3K. After all, I wasn't going to do a song about MST3K around a gangsta rap song by 50 Cent. It just wouldn't fit. "Mr. Jinx" does. At first, I wanted to create my own beat, but after trying out some MST3K lyrics to the beat of "Mr. Jinx", it fit well and was just right. I've titled the song "Mr. Neptune Man" based on Invasion of the Neptune Men which is my all time favorite MST3K episode and the one character that chases me the most throughout the video. (By the way, "Mr. Jinx" can be heard in commercials for the NBA on TNT or you can download it off of Kazaa. ) "Mr. Neptune Man" will be light hearted and a little silly just like MST3K. More Will Smith than Eminem. Something everyone can listen to.
The song itself will feature me letting out my feelings on the Sci-Fi and Comedy Central execs who cancelled the show and all the directors of the bad films shown on MST3K. I will also do a brief summary of what the show is about. I will also try to cram as much MST3K quotes, characters, and references as I can into a 10 minute video. The video will have me rapping in a blue jumpsuit intersperse with shots of me running into the MST3K characters while the band waits for me to arrive and gets the crowd hyped up. That too is based on the "Mr. Jinx" music video, but I've added alot more to it, with alot more being the MST3K stuff.
I do have the basic plot planned out, although I am still rewriting and double checking stuff. First off, I actually have to convince my friends to form a band with me. I can play the guitar, but I can't really sing. And none of my friends can't play any instruments. I have two options. One, I can get them signed up to take music classes and learn how to play the drums, bass, guitar, keyboard. Or, I can just have me and my friends form a singing or rap group and hire a back up band. Then that would mean finding a back up band that would be willing to play with us. Next step would finding enough people to play the MST3K characters, and creating the costumes. Mike Nelson's outfit is not so hard, but what about Mr. B Natural's outfit? Or Torgo? And I also need extras to appear in the club where the band performs. Afterall, the band needs to get SOMEONE hyped up while they wait for me to show. It's gonna take some work to design the costumes, especially the Neptune Men costumes. In a perfect world, Christy Carlson Romano a.k.a. my future wife would be playing the part of Mr. B Natural.
I also have to actually record the song before I can even do a video. And I have to have money to do that also. And find places empty enough where alot of people won't be seeing a man in a blue jumpsuit being chased by a bunch of guys wearing gray costumes with bullethead masks while someone carrying a camera films all of it.
But I believe it is possible for me to accomplish all of this if I'm not lazy. It's possible, I just have to spend some time working for it to come true. I'm not trying to create a masterpiece or anything, I'm not doing this so I can create the greatest music video ever. I know my video isn't going to be appearing on MTV anytime soon. All I want to do is have fun and pay tribute to my all time favorite t.v. show. I love music, I love movies, and I love MST3K, so I want to combine all three into something I'd really like. I want my video to be okay. I want the people I show the video to to like it. I may even upload the song on this site, and let you all listen to it and tell me what you think. And I may upload pictures of the filming of the video. It's gonna be alittle hard, considering that I also want some special effects in the video, and I want Gamera to appear, but it may end up being worth it. All that matters is that I have fun making a music video/short film with my friends.
And even though it won't be the greatest video in the history of music, atleast I can say that I made a rap song and music video about Mystery Science Theater 3000 which is pretty cool and unique. ;D
So help me with ideas on the videos. You know the basic plot, but you can chime in with your own ideas as well. Tell me what characters I should have in the video. Maybe help me with some of the lyrics. Give some ideas so I can make "Mr. Neptune Man" an okay song and video. Help me out, yo!
