Actually, I recently threw this idea out and started over again from scratch. I decided to combine this with my "Mystery Science Theater 4000" fanvideo ideas - now, my concept for MST3K:TAS keeps the idea of animated host segments and shadowramas with the original characters, but the movies they watch are the same kind of movies that the original series had. I realized that it was those types of movies - campy, low-budget drive-in trash - that gave the Brains the most to work with. Animated movies provide you with an entirely different kind of riffing - you can't knock goofy special effects or ugly actors or technical bloopers because there usually aren't any. Plus, most of the animated movies I had on my list would be hell to get the rights to, and I try to keep my fan-projects at least somewhat rooted in reality. However, I did create this promotional poster for the series, so you can get a good idea of what Mike and the bots would look like... www.deviantart.com/deviation/50567103/?qo=39&q=by%3Ajbwarner86&qh=sort%3Atime+-in%3Ascraps

Ya know, I'm kinda dissapointed, as I thought your riffing of animated movies had the potential to be great
though I still support your idea and will help out in any way if needed.

I still really think it's a great idea, despite the fact MST-ings still have loads of issues to contend with to get going. Good luck. Also, about that pic - Mike and Crow look really good, but to me there's something a tad weird about a Servo with teeth...

I have not seen it at all, but there is a movie at the Wal-Mart $1-bin that is called "Kimba" or something like that. It's probably public domain and I bet it sucks...

Okay, if you still want to do some animated movies, then you should check out some of these titles:
-Ratatoing -Little Cars and its sequel Little Cars 2 -Shark Bait
Don't get them confused with their Pixar "counterparts" (aka the movies from which this company totally ripped-off the ideas), but maybe if you need something easy to do, I don't think it'd be hard to get the rights to them...

This thread is so old that nobody cares, but I'm a huge animation buff, so I have to post and defend a couple of the movies on the original list.
The Thief and the Cobbler is one of the best animated films ever made, if you can get your hands on the workprint, or the 'Recobbled' version that's been going around the net lately. If you can find it, watch it.
Cats Don't Dance looks like a terrible movie, but it's actually really fun, for your kids if not for you, with a couple of surprisingly good songs and cute character designs. The box looks awful, the concept sounds awful, the movie is cute.
Okay, now my conscience is clear. Having said that, I would LOVE to see films like 'Fire and Ice' or 'Starchaser: Legend of Orin' riffed. They're delightfully cheesy, and don't even have the excuse of being aimed at young children.

Well, I reiterate that I eventually decided that animated movies wouldn't work for MST3K. They lend themselves to a different kind of riffing, and as the list illustrates, there aren't enough obscure bad ones for a whole series.
So basically, this entire thread is moot now.

I don't think it makes the thread moot just because you've changed your mind about the idea... I'm still allowed to like it, aren't I?
Anyway, even if most animated films wouldn't work for MST3K style riffing, I still think that there are a few that would work and would be really funny. Goofy plots, poor acting and crappy visuals definitely exist in both live action and animation.
