Those Russo-Finnish films are painstakingly awful.

From the reviews they mention nothing of sinbad or a sampo, just a german version of Christopher Columbus and a wood worm named Pico. And some animated stuff.

Those Russo-Finnish films are painstakingly awful. Again Russo-Finnish films are just wretched.

Damn it! I thought Rhino might be putting out a really cool new essentials!
Damn damn damn!
So, does this belong more in Sloanes, since it's misleading (and heartbreaking to MST fans) and the Amazon write ups are screwy?

Come to think of it, why are they talking about Christopher Columbus... and not the actual russo-finnish gems??

This is really more news. I guess next time we'll have uncut in the subject.

Since the last posts here the reviews you are talking about have been apparently taken down, but there is a new post by someone involved in the film's dubbing (if it's not a fake) and it's actually pretty interesting...check it out.

Ptushko's son berates Coppola for making Sadko into a goofy movie called Day the Earth Froze. In its actual uncut form it is a really good movie, with a new released on DVD this month.

Yeah i meant Magic Voyage.
It won the Venice Film Festival Silver Lion in 1953. It is better known to American audiences, unfortunately, in a truncated, de-communized, de-Russianized and generally emasculated English translation cobbled together by Roger Corman and a young Francis Ford Coppola under the outrageous name of The Magic Voyage of Sinbad is a very sad chapter in the history of US-Soviet relations during the Cold War, which I would not go into except for the fact that Coppola's dingy version has recently come out on DVD (for i made this thread unbeknowest it wasn't Sadko, but magic voyage) and was given much more fanfare than the legitimate Russian restoration of the original masterpiece. The American version was so bad, it ended up on mst3k as you know.
