Do we really need one thread for Summer Movies of 2005? I think certain big movies (SW-Episode III, Batman Begins, War of the Worlds, Fantastic Four, etc.) should have their own threads, but this general Summer Movies thread can be a catch-all for everything else. (There's just too many movies during Summer to have a separate thread for every one.) Good point!

From what I've read of his War of the Worlds, it seems much more conventional than AI and Minority Report though. All I hope is War of the Worlds doesn't suck like Independence Day does. (And not having Will Smith already gives it a leg up.)

Anyone else feeling ambivalent about The Fantastic Four?
I want to see it, yet I am afraid.

Didn't see a "Star Wars" thread to post on, so will just type on this one. Saw Star Wars yesterday and was blown away by it. It is so moving and THE Best film of all of them! Don't wait for the DVD, shell out the bucks to see this one on the big sceen for the full effect!

I think I'm just going to say that so far this summer's movies are wayyyyy better than last summer. Has anyone thought that? Last summer was perhaps the worst EVER. Yeah, last summer sucked.

I think the only movies worth seeing that came out last year were Spiderman 2, Shawn of the Dead, and Team America: World Police.
I saw Batman Begins recently. It's undoubtedly the best live-action Batman movie I've ever seen. The only other Batman movie/TV experiences that truly impressed me up to this point were from the creators of The Animated Series, so I didn't go in with high expectations. The opening is a bit slow, but once Bruce goes back to Gotham things get a whole lot better. I highly recommend it. The next movie will probably be even better because Katie Homes won't be in it. It's directed by Christopher Nolan who also directed Memento. I checked that movie out because Kevin Murphy said he enjoyed it. That one is great too.

I think the only movies worth seeing that came out last year were Spiderman 2, Shawn of the Dead, and Team America: World Police. Well, the last two weren't really Summer Movie because Shaun of the Dead wasn't released (in America) until the end of September 2004, and Team America wasn't released until October. Probably the best movies from last Summer were Spider-Man 2, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, The Bourne Supremacy, and Shrek 2. This Summer has definitely improved upon last Summer, but the presence of Spider-Man 2 keeps last Summer from being the "Worst Movie Summer Ever" (I think either 1998 or 1996 takes that honor).

I wasn't really thinking in terms of summer when I posted that. Kind of went OT with that tangent. I was just trying to think of movies I enjoyed that came out last year. I forgot about the Potter and Shrek sequels though. They were ok.

From what I've read of his War of the Worlds, it seems much more conventional than AI and Minority Report though. All I hope is War of the Worlds doesn't suck like Independence Day does. (And not having Will Smith already gives it a leg up.) Sorry to say, it does. Most of the story is Tom Cruise running from danger. That's pretty much it. Unfortunately there are some laughable plot points that H.G.Wells was smart enough to figure out, but Mr. Spielberg evidently couldn't. In his tampering with this part of the story he spoils an otherwise fine effort. (WARNING, SPOILERS!) My problem with the movie is the burying of the alien tripods on earth some millennia ago. This ruins the whole premise of how the aliens are defeated. Think about it. When they buried the tripods don't you *think* at least a few of the aliens would have gotten infected and died before they were finished and they could have been smart enough to either call it off or perfect a vaccine before returning millennia into the future? Jules Vern was smart enough to avoid this by having everything arrive at the same time. It is also implied in the movie that the tripods are just beneath the surface. Surely we have the technology to see anomalies under the earths surface. How do you think we find oil? And if not that don't you think someone somewhere with a backhoe burying pipe would have discovered one some decades ago? Bah! I really didn't want to let this get in the way. The movie is really a disturbing look at how fragile civilization is, but if they had stuck with the original H.G.Wells concept that they landed here with the machines it wouldn't have been so ridiculous and caused me to get distracted. Really stupid.

You're absolutely right! My wife even corrected me on it leaving the theater. Sometimes a wrong idea gets lodged in your head and won't come unstuck. I read both H.G Wells and Jules Vern stories one summer when I was a kid and ever after I get the two confused. Doh! Look whose's stupid now!

So, how many scenes of people looking were there?

God, it was nothing but looking, looking and looking. As Kevin Murphy may say, "Mister Spielberg, you're on audience probation!"
