*SPOILERS* I actually enjoyed War of the Worlds. Some parts were a little strange, such as during the scene in Olgivy's basement you see the Martians running around without wearing any sort of Spacesuit. Also the ending was a little bit too happy. I thiought it was pretty faithful reproduction of the original Novel (but with a change in time period) along with some bits of the 1953 movie put in. Other than some plot problems concerning the Martians it was a pretty good movie.
I give it a 4.5... out of 5.
Oh, and by the way, did anyone notice that the Martians had an odd resemblance to the Aliens from Independence Day?

I saw George Romero's Land of the Dead. I liked it and don't understand why it has gotten so many bad reviews. Maybe due to the fact that I amd familiar with Romero's earlier zombie movies, so knew basically what to expect from him. Because the movie fits in well with Romero's earlier zombie movies and the progression in zombie intelligence that he first had in the original Dawn of the Dead and especially Day of the Dead. I think my only disappointment was the short running time of the movie, about 90 minutes - I would've liked it to be a bit longer.

(WARNING, SPOILERS!) My problem with the movie is the burying of the alien tripods on earth some millennia ago. This ruins the whole premise of how the aliens are defeated. Think about it. When they buried the tripods don't you *think* at least a few of the aliens would have gotten infected and died before they were finished and they could have been smart enough to either call it off or perfect a vaccine before returning millennia into the future? Actually, given that microbes are always mutating and changing, the ones that killed them probably didn't even exist millions of years ago. In fact, if they had encountered some bacteria millions of years ago and taken a vaccine against it now, chances are it wouldn't work anymore because the bacteria have changed so much over the millennia.

It's been a while since I've read War of the Worlds, but aren't the aliens SUPPOSED to be from Mars?

(Mainly because the entire movie is from Tom Cruise's character's perspective, and he doesn't know anything... except maybe some Scientology nonsense.)

Saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Sunday. Both the wife and I loved it. She read the book as a child and said the movie was almost dead on from the book. They changed some minor things about the kids, but the rest was straight out of the book. Johnny Depp evidently spoke with the authors widow and she gave her blessing to the project. This is one of Tim Burton's best films and I would recomend anyone who likes his work to go see this film. I have a feeling there are going to be some "little gold statues" for this one! It's one hell of a ride. (Sampo, its got some 2001 a Space Odyssey in it!)

For Tim Burton, this was the most ideal match of source material to his style that he's had in over a decade. I like that this movie was more faithful to the book (as I recall) than the '71 Gene Wilder movie version, with the exception of all of those flackbacks to Willy Wonka's childhood and all of the stuff with his father. (I thought there was too much of that.) And it makes me want to re-read the book again (it's been a very long time since I read it) as well as see the Gene Wilder version again just to refresh my memory of both.

My wife remarked that Willie's childhood flashbacks were not in the book, but she said it didn't detract from the story at all. I really laughed out loud in the theater at Christopher Lee's portrayal of the candy hating dentist\father. It was a small role admittedly, but a memorable performance non-the-less. kudos to him!!
Do you think Johnny Depp was going for a Michael Jackson slant to Willie?

Do you think Johnny Depp was going for a Michael Jackson slant to Willie? I loved this movie and, I love you too Doc, but, I'm so damn tired of hearing this!!! Please, everyone, stop comparing a good, clean, fun film to a damn pedophile. See the movie, it's quite good. But if you don't, well, I don't care. Servo

I didn't think Depp was going for a pedophile but here he is locked up in his own little fantasy world speaking in a small, tight little voice trying to hold it all together. The comparison is pretty obvious. I stopped noticing it half way into the movie to tell you the truth. It was just edgy, that's all. Nothing in the film even remotely suggests that Willie is doing anything sick with the kids and you quickly forget about the whole thing and just enjoy the ride. It is a very good movie!

Yeah, I guess some might have thought it for a minute. It's just I've heard and read so many damn people talking about how "Oh, he had to base that on Michael Jackson" that it's made me physically ill. Servo

The fact that Depp's Wonka doesn't really look like Michael Jackson except superficially, and doesn't sound like Wacko Jacko at all doesn't seem to sink in with everyone. Instead, Johnny Depp has many times said that the look of Willy Wonka was based on Vogue editor Anna Wintour. (here's a picture of her): And that the voice he uses for the character was based on the voices of Captain Kangaroo and Mister Rogers.

Was anyone else forced to see dukes of hazzard? *cries* At least I didn't have to pay... If anyone forced me to see The Dukes of Hazzard movie, I think I would in turn force that person to cut out and swallow their own entrails. For starters. The only kinda mainstream movies I've liked this summer have been Land of the Dead, Dark Water and The Devil's Rejects (which was so wrong, and yet so enjoyable). Oh, and the Star Wars movie was pretty good. The only other movies I've seen that were really great were indie or foreign films that came out last year and only got a release at my second-run theater this summer (Downfall, Red Lights, Millions, Layer Cake, Bad Education, Palindromes). Other than that, I avoid summer movies like the ebola virus. Oh, I forgot -- I liked Sin City. Did that come out this summer? I have no conception of time.

I used to see facsimilies of that damn car everywhere in Spartanburg, SC when I lived in that sorry assed place for 3 lost years of my life (The show was on the air then). Patooie. I spit.
