I love this movie. So much, I can't say anything but that I love it. Love love LOVE it.
Vigilante heater repair-men, travelling plastic surgeons, that godawful baby-face mask...

Terry Gilliam IMO has done the best of all the Pythons, solo-wise.
I really enjoy his work and "Brazil" may be his masterpiece.

I have to admit...I didn't care for this movie. Sorry.
Maybe you have to watch it in a group, or maybe you have to be in the right "mood" for it...I just didn't care for it.
I'm tempted to watch it again to see if I change my mind, but I don't think I will just yet.
Mind you, I don't really think that it's a *bad* movie, I just felt like I should be doing something else rather than watching it, a feeling that I don't want when I've decided to waste an hour or two on a film.
I'll report back if I see it again and change my mind.

Is this supposed to imply that he's free in his mind? I think that's rather brilliant, because it was his mind which was the only free place in that world. Kinda a screwed up happy ending, like in ACO! That's always been my interp.

I figured "lost" him meant he lost his mind and the torture would no longer matter.
There's a similar arguement for the end of Taxi Driver. Whether in the the last scene, after Travis is shot in the neck, he really recovers or the last few scenes are in his head as he's dying.

Another good DeNiro "screw with you" ending is in "Once Upon A Time In America," which suggests the entire 1960's segment was an opium dream. Wow!

I'm trying to figure out if the main character guy in Brazil dies or not. The scientists say: "He's gone." But it shows him clearly twitching and humming the theme song. Is this supposed to imply that he's free in his mind? I think that's rather brilliant, because it was his mind which was the only free place in that world. Kinda a screwed up happy ending, like in ACO! My friend instists that he died, but I thought they turned him into a vegetable. My interpretation is similar, except not made a vegetable - he checked out. Free in his mind, as you say. And to me, because of this, I always feel uplifted at the end. To me it's a happy ending. If you get the chance check out the Criterion Collection box set of Brazil. It includes the Hollywood "Love Conquers All" version of the film that they wanted released (and actually ran on TV if I remember correctly). It does have a happy ending. And Gilliam stood his ground to get the true film released. A_Sr.

On a retrospective documentary of Sergio Leone, someone in it claims that once asked Leone if that section of the movie was all an opium dream, and he told the guy that he had figured out the movie. As for Brazil - yes, he is insane and happy in the fantasy world that exists in his mind. (Unless you watch the "Happy Ending" edited version, in which he gets away with the girl and lives happily ever after in a trailer.)

"This is a professional relationship." I was so into this film during the late 1980's that for a three month period I watched it at least once a week. It is utterly believable, sick and funny all at the same time. One of my top 10 films of all time.
Central Services.
