I've been procrastinating today. My friends gave me back my LotR Extended Edition DVDs after about a year, so I've been watching them and all the extras. It's amazing how much work went into these things with the miniatures, Big-atures, the script rewrites, etc.
By the way, there's no poll on here asking what you think b/c I know it's the greatest multi-movie epic ever made (despite Forrest's protestations). I don't need anyone else's confirmation to recognize beauty. ;D
I do have one question, though: is Elijah Wood the Mark Hamill of our time? Bad actor in an amazing movie who somehow doesn't get in the way. He gets my vote.

Those are some of the best movies ever, although Elijah does fall down and scream a lot.

Elijah's not a bad actor. If you turned a puppy into a human, he'd be it. And I think he has range, and is growing as an actor. Just my 2 cents...

I actually haven't seen the entirety of any of the LOTR movies (didn't see any of 3). I kinda want to read the books before I start in on the movies... but Tolkien's writing style is a bit tough to get used to for me.

I can understand the opinion that the movies are long, and therefore feel tedious. But considering it's widely considered to be one of the best stories ever written (and certainly of the 20th century), I don't get the "boring" criticism.
Is it that you think there are too many characters? Is it that many of the characters are fantasy races? Is it all the endings of ROTK? Or is it because the whole trilogy is essentially a road movie?
I just don't understand how anyone could find it boring. It's got huge battle scenes, swordfighting, chase scenes, unexpected deaths, one peril after another, great inner turmoil, two really evil dudes with monstrous armies, a giant spider, symbolism up the wazoo, and one of the best villains ever brought to life.
I know people like TS69 like to complain about the endless rock climbing, and I guess I can see that. But the Gollum/Sam/Frodo interplay and both the Shelob and Cracks of Doom payoffs make it nothing like the pain of "The Lost Continent".

Wow. Umm, yeah.
Anyway, I went into these with an open mind, and I liked them. Better than most book-to-movie versions, that's for sure.
Here's hoping Narnia turns out as well.

The previews for the Narnia books look godawful. Or rather, they look like they'd be good British made-for-TV movie things. But they're nothing to what Jackson did.
