Serenity, the movie spin-off of the short-lived Firefly TV-show opens on Sept 30th, so I thought "Mitchell's Movies" needed a thread on the movie itself. This is one of the movies I've been looking forward to the most this year, ever since seeing the original show earlier in the year.

I saw the beginning of an episode of Firefly, I liked it but something else was on that I wanted to watch so I changed the channel. I might have to go see this movie just to see what all the fuss is about.

I think watching most of the episodes to the show is required for this movie. I'm betting that someone going in who knows the show well will enjoy this movie a lot, but someone who has never seen the show probably won't like it.

I read a review that said you don't have to be familiar with the series to know what's going on. It may help, though. www.comingsoon.net/news/reviewsnews.php?id=11129

I wouldn't see this if someone payed for my ticket. And why not? I'm gonna go because I liked Firefly a lot.

I wouldn't see this if someone payed for my ticket. And why not? If you have to ask that, you haven't been around Forrest much.

lol I'm going to let this slide because the picture and text on your signature makes me laugh so much Torgo. Would it make you angry if I told you I swiped it from a sitcom? Still a quote that cracks me up. God I miss Titus, the most cynical program I've ever known.

I saw it today. Loved it. Much more brutal and dark than I expected.
I don't know that you need to have seen the series to get the flick. It helps, but it's not necessary to understand what's happening.

I know a lot of people who both liked the show and hadn't even heard of it who really think this is a great sci fi flick.
So Forrest is obviously wrong.

I'm going to go see Serenity thursday. Hopefully it will suck so I don't have to buy that Firefly DVD set.

I like a good sci-fi adventure story. They always seem to be the most fun to me. Of course, this catagory is absolutly owned by both Star Trek and the Matrix. I enjoy Star Wars, Sliders, and the Chronicles of Riddick as well. I went into Serenity with very little knowledge on the television series Firefly (I skipped it because I wasn't into the whole Buffy/Angel thing), but it didn't ruin my enjoyment of this rousing space western. There's really something here for everyone to enjoy. There's plenty of action, humor, a dab of drama, and even spots of weirdness for those who like those odd kinds of movies. However that oddness is something that kept me from enjoying Serenity to it's full extent. I didn't care for the whole River, the Super-Wonder-Woman thing. It adds a vibe of Resident Evil cheesiness that feels just odd in the context of the rest of the film. Plus, by the end, it's obvious it was mostly done so Joss Whedon could write himself out of a corner. I almost expected that Laurance Fishburn look-alike bad guy to show up and say "You're the One, River." But if you dig sci-fi, Serenity fits the bill, even if you're not familiar with the series. It shows us enough to explain to the audience who these characters are without ruining the series for those who want to go back and watch it. Serenity is nothing special, nor is it that spectacular, but damn is it fun. *** out of ****

I liked it and the storyline was a good continuation of elements introduced in the TV show.
BUT....
...I HATED that two characters from the show (I won't name which ones) get killed. Really surprising given that Joss Whedon wants to make it into a movie trilogy. (You'd think he'd wait until the 3rd movie to kill anyone off.)
