I think the recent word says Travis Knight is being hounded for Guardians 3. I haven't seen Kubo and the Two Strings but I hear great things. My excitement might ride on how well that Bumblebee movie turns out.
Smith doesn't really consider himself a real director and he admits he'd probably fumble a large budget project (Cop Out was his largest budgeted flick and it's easily his worst). He does work as a director for hire on The Flash and Supergirl, but he considers those more collaborative efforts.
I still love Smith though, and go out of my way to see his movies. I even saw Yoga Hosers in a theater. Unfortunately his last good movie was Zack and Miri Make a Porno, though I'll admit Red State had an interesting story and the history of how Tusk was conceived is hilarious.
But my love of Dogma, Clerks, and Clerks II knows no bounds. And I don't care what anybody says, I like Jersey Girl.

Effing Marvel, dropping this while I'm at work. But damn, if that didn't get the emotions going again. Bring it on.

I was at work too. But I dropped everything and was "Goin' to break!" when it dropped.
It's very subdued. It seems like almost everything in the trailer is from the first act of the movie before the plot is set in motion. This might be a very secretive marketing campaign. And I don't blame them.
It also revealed that the release date was vumped up to April again. Sweet.
Also, tomorrow the first Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer drops. Spoiler Alert: Spider-Man lives!
And Godzilla on Sunday. I'm in nerd heaven this week!

Wow, this really is a busy week.
I liked the new Captain Marvel trailer earlier this week, too. Something tells me there's a lot they're not showing us in the trailer with that flick, as well. I'm curious to see just how much of that movie flows into Endgame, too.
This definitely gets the juices flowing, though. Loved the ending with Lang and the "buzz me in" line. Just hearing a touch of hope/disbelief in Rogers' voice is exciting.

Speaking of that Captain Marvel trailer, Mr. Sunday posted his breakdown of that. He has some pretty good observations that I hadn't noticed.
Kevin Smith just posted his Avengers reaction as well. While his is more nerding out, one thing he points out that I find rather interesting is that he thinks the trailer emphasizes the word "rescue" in Tony's speech at the beginning, and he thinks Pepper Potts is going to suit up as Rescue to save him from being marooned.

Minor note: Someone bought tickets for me to the early Aquaman screening hosted by Amazon on the 15th as an early Christmas present. I'll post my thought ASAP.
On that subject, I'll probably see Into the Spider-Verse the day before. Let's stay optimistic and say hopefully they're both good. Into the Spider-Verse has good word of mouth, but I dunno. The jerky animation looks annoying and I'm not feelin' Jake Johnson as Peter Parker. Or maybe I'm just keeping my expectations low so I can absolutely adore it to the maximum level.

Update: Mr. Sunday's breakdown of Avengers: Endgame is up. He has more to work with here than I thought he would have, though he misses that the title "Endgame" was also taken from Age of Ultron when Tony said "That up there, that's the endgame."
But he drops a lot of fun tidbits. One that I personally notice but don't believe many people were talking about was that Cap is sporting his Winter Soldier outfit. Maybe he got tired of the ragged one that he wore down.

Apparently the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer has been delayed, likely because Sony didn't want to be decimated by the Avengers: Endgame trailer. Avengers was originally scheduled to be released on Wednesday, but it was pushed back to respect the funeral of George Bush.
Some news outlets are reporting the Spidey trailer was screened at a con in Brazil though. I have no clue if this is true, but it's possible it was a con exclusive (though why Brazil, I have no idea). But I'm also hearing they're delaying it until the 18th to coincide with the Venom home video release.

Bummer, I was looking forward to capping off the week with that trailer. Still, it's been quite the run here the last few days. Fun stuff.
I try not to get too much into speculation with trailers (as much as I can, and I admit, I'm weak), so I'll just say so far one thing I really like about the trailer is that the title/logo looks gorgeous. Kind of a bluey-purple. Now that I think about it, the Tony Stark scene at the beginning has a gnarly look to it color-wise, too. Different than what I've seen before, and definitely different from much of Infinity War.
It's a long way to Captain Marvel. Sigh.

You might not have to wait too long Mod. The more I think about it the more it makes sense that they'll want to debut this trailer in time for Into the Spider-Verse, so I personally think tying it in to Venom is unlikely.
Turns out the Brazil con thing is true though, and Sony's definitely sitting on it for now.
I still have Godzilla to look forward to though. The Monarch teases on Twitter are driving me batty!

Well, it's going to be a busy weekend for me. Not only is my 30 Days of MSTmas in full swing, but I'm also going to take a chunk of time this weekend at the movies. Why? Because SUPERHEROES. Starting tonight, I've got one superhero movie a day until Saturday, and I started with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
I'm going to say right now I think the hype is a tad bit overblown. I'm hearing some people act like this movie is the second coming, personally I just thought it was a pretty good movie. Does it have a shot at the Best Animated Oscar this year? Actually it does, though I think that's more due to a lack of competition more than anything. Personally I enjoyed Incredibles 2 more, but I think it's similar beats to the first one are going to be a hindrance to it. Ralph Breaks the Internet was blah. I haven't seen The Grinch, but I've heard mixed things. I don't think anybody's going to look at Teen Titans GO! and say "OSCAR!" no matter how much they secretly enjoyed it. What else came out this year? Early Man? Hotel Transylvania 3? Pfft. Maybe a foreign animated film will sweep it away from Spider-Man.
BUT this is definitely the best non-Avengers team up Spider-Man movie since Sam Raimi touched the franchise with his magic Evil Dead hands. I enjoyed Homecoming, but it wasn't all too memorable. I remember it being funny, and Michael Keaton staring into a rear view mirror. That's about it. I do look forward to Far from Home, though I do wish the major beats of the movie will hit harder the second time around.
And the answer is no, there is no Far from Home trailer with Into the Spider-Verse. Actually the only superhero trailers with it were Aquaman, Shazam, and Bumblebee. There were a surprising number of faith based drama trailers though. Including one with former Venom Topher Grace.
The story goes like this, Miles Morales is bitten by a radioactive spider and coincidentally winds up where Spider-Man is fighting the Kingpin the following night (yay, plot convenience!). Kingpin is trying to turn on a dimensional portal to get doubles of his recently deceased wife and son from another dimension, and Spider-Man is killed trying to stop him. It was at this point I had realized I had seen Spider-Man hopelessly killed in front of my eyes twice in a single year, but I digress. The machine doesn't fully work but it does accidentally suck up five different Spidey heroes from other dimensions and spit them out into Miles's, including a Mitchell-like Peter alternate, Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Ham, and Peni Parker and her SP//dr suit. But being in another dimension is making them unstable and Miles must use his new powers to become the new Spider-Man and help them get home.
The animation falls under a good...ish category for me. I like the idea of it, but I think the jerkiness and out of focus blurriness of characters in the foreground is both distracting and murder on the eyes. That said, the comic book aesthetic is unique and intriguing, and when it works it's breathtaking. There are certain things these Spider-people do that we'd never see a live action take do, even with the best of CGI. Watching them do their thing is a blessing to any Spidey-fan. The Spideys are well portrayed too, with Shameik Moore playing Miles to a tee, and Bumblebee's Hailee Steinfeld bringing my beloved Spider-Gwen to glorious life. Noir, Ham, and Peni all exist more as comedic background noise, but all are well portrayed (Nicolas Cage is especially excellent as Noir). I'm not a huge fan of Jake Johnson really, but his version of Peter makes sense and is well done, though I'd have much rather Chris Pine have played both universe versions of Peter. Really, his opening version of regular Spider-Man is pretty perfect as he shows off with some giddy winks to the Sam Raimi films.
I was surprised at the number of villains in this movie. I should have expected to see Prowler, since this was a Miles Morales movie, but yep he's here. Liev Schreiber is rock solid as Kingpin (though I would have preferred it if he had played Norman Osborn in a live action movie). The female version of Doctor Octopus steals the show with a gorgeous take on her limbs. Tombstone...exists. He doesn't really do anything. The new Scorpion design is entertaining. Green Goblin has a cameo, but is quickly dispatched.
The movie has a lot going on with quite a few characters, but like Infinity War this year it keeps itself pretty well streamlined. It also relies more on emotional complications rather that plot complications. But probably the one glaring thing in the plot that falls apart, and this might be a nitpick but it's so glaring that it ticks me off, are the in-universe the Spider-Man comics. Miles realizes he's turning into a Spider-Man by reading one and realizing what he's going through is the same thing Peter went through, in a comic that has Peter's identity out in the open. At first I assumed this might have been something post-Civil War when Peter outed himself, but then it's established that nobody knew Peter Parker was Spider-Man later in the film. Then how does a public comic tell his origin story?!?!?
GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! Okay, I'm done playing Comic Book Guy.
Into the Spider-Verse is overall a fun little treat that ends this years slate of Marvel films on a high note, though it doesn't quite live up to Black Panther or Infinity War, at least not for me. But I'm intrigued by this little animated Spider-Man multiverse they're playing with, far more than their live action villain universe that...is a thing...I guess. I mean, I don't give a crap about a Morbius movie, but holy crap I want a Spider-Gwen movie right freakin' NOW!
Spidey rank: 1. Spider-Man 2 2. Captain America: Civil War 3. Spider-Man 3 (dancing Peter is muh jam) 4. Spider-Man 5. Avengers: Infinity War 6. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 7. The Amazing Spider-Man 8. Spider-Man: Homecoming 9. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 10. Venom (if it counts)

Day 2 of my superhero weekend is here. Today is Once Upon a Deadpool, the PG-13 edit of Deadpool 2 released in theaters. Why bother seeing it? To torture Fred Savage, of course. That and a portion of ticket sales go to charity, so why the hell not?
But if you're paying just for the show and don't give a damn about the good your money is going to do, is Once Upon a Deadpool worth it? Not really. It's basically like watching the edited for television version of the movie on the big screen, only they're more lenient on the "S" word. I'll admit I was mildly curious to see if a PG-13 Deadpool could work on the big screen, but that experiment felt inconclusive. The movie was obviously filmed for that R rating and you can definitely feel it has been cut down. If Deadpool 2 had filmed an alternate PG-13 version of it's takes simultaneously while filming maybe this film would have felt more whole. CGI blood splatters have been removed, and sometimes it's to its detriment because most of the impact shots are done from behind to add this gore effect, and without them it sometimes makes it hard to tell who got hit at what time.
However, I will say without the added gore I think Vanessa's death was much stronger in this version. The more held back take on the scene made the impact of the bullet seem to hit that much harder.
The only new footage is wrap-arounds featuring Deadpool reading the film out loud as a story to a kidnapped Fred Savage, in a reference to The Princess Bride. I hate Princess Bride, so I have no nostalgia for that movie, but a lot of the big laughs from this edit come from these scenes. Though sometimes they're obvious and belabored, they're for the most part the most successful part of the movie.
If you want to donate to cancer research and get a watered down movie out of the deal, I say check it out. If you liked Deadpool 2 there should be at least one scene remaining that you love. Personally for me, I don't care what edit of the movie I watch, I always laugh at "You killed Black Tom YOU RACIST SON OF A BITCH!"
And stick around to the very end of the credits not just for a bonus scene between Deadpool and Fred Savage but also a wonderful tribute video to Stan Lee. Excelsior!

And I'm ending my superhero weekend with the Amazon Prime preview screening of Aquaman. If you've been waiting patiently in the aftermath of Justice League in hope that DC and WB have learned their lessons and are returning to Wonder Woman level of quality filmmaking...wait a little longer.
I wouldn't dismiss this movie outright, but there are so many variables in how someone is going to view this movie. It's going to depend on what you want from it and what you want from movies in general. If you want flashy escapism, by all means see the bloody thing. It's a giant light and sound show. It's kinda Thor: Ragnarok with a tenth of the unfunny humor. And stylistically closer to the Star Wars prequels. Oh hell, let's just call it Jupiter Ascending underwater. With Jason Momoa tearing through it.
Basically, if you have a general impression of this movie based on the trailers, trust that instinct because what you're picturing is exactly what this movie is.
But going back to Jason Momoa, I don't know if he's the saving grace of this movie or the worst thing in it. He feels like he's acting in a completely separate movie from everyone else. His supporting cast treats this lore with such earnestness and serious faces, and then he appears with his rockin' surf dude shtick and just goes full blown tongue-in-cheek. But in general his supporting cast is pretty great. Patrick Wilson, Willem Dafoe, and Dolph Lundgren are all pretty good here. Amber Heard on the other hand...she can get a little grating, and she's not great in this movie. That might not be her fault though, since most of the worst dialogue is given to her character.
The action is pretty sweet. Say what you will about James Wan (and I've said a lot...FURIOUS 7 SUCKS BUTT!) but the guy frames his action scenes better anybody else who has helmed these DC films so far. When the action is gracing the screen the movie shines. And boy does he put his love of twisty camera loopty loops to good use here. The chase scene with Black Manta in the middle of the film is probably the highlight.
Aquaman is also a bit of an unconventional superhero movie. It feels like a movie trying to imitate Star Wars more than anything, with a little detour down an Indiana Jones path halfway through. Momoa's Aquaman doesn't really do the superhero thing of beat up the bad guy but rather go on a quest to find an ancient relic that will prove him to be the rightful king over Patrick Wilson's Ocean Master. He does get a good vs. evil fight at the end, but the movie overall feels more sci-fi than superhero. If I didn't say anything else positive about it I could at the very least say it was an interesting change of pace.
I had fun. Half of it was really cheesy, half of it was really cool. It could have been a lot better, but it still somehow is one of the better films in the DC universe so far. But that might be more of a testament to how much DC has shot themselves in the foot overall. It's good that their franchise is getting better, but boy is it frustrating watching them realize their mistakes by acting like a blind man feeling his way through an unfamiliar room.
DC Whatever Universe ranking: 1. Wonder Woman 2. Man of Steel 3. Aquaman 4. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice 5. Justice League 6. Suicide Squad (probably forever)
Marvel vs. DC 2018 results: 1. Black Panther 2. Avengers: Infinity War 3. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 4. Deadpool 2 5. Teen Titans GO! to the Movies 6. Aquaman 7. Ant-Man and the Wasp 8. Venom
