I haven't listened to an entire Rifftrax through yet, so perhaps I shouldn't be speaking too soon, but so far, I've found myself disappointed with the clips I've seen. The idea is brilliant, but the entire pace and style of the riffs is quite different from MST3K. Maybe older B-movies are better material for these guys, because when I watched the clips of the Film Crew riffing on the Wild Women of Wongo and Hollywood After Dark, I laughed my ass off. Maybe Rifftrax is something you have to adapt to or maybe I just miss the bots.

Well, if you are expecting it to be be as good as MST3K, then I think it will fall short. There are no host segments, of course, so for me at least some of the fun is missing. The cheap sets, the goofy "plot", all of these added to the charm. And yes, he does have to stick to a different type of movie, something people can get fairly easily and cheaply through amazon or netflix or whatever.
So yeah, I do like MST3K better. But... that is gone, and it isn't coming back. This runs a pretty good second, however, and I'm glad it's around.

I find the riffing in this is pretty top notch considering its probably only Mike and Kevin/Bill doing the writing (vs. a team of writers with MST).
Also, I must admit I am a fan of the cheasier movies like RoadHouse, Cocktail and Crossroads. I find these cheesy movies tend to give Mike more material to work with and they just seem funnier.
Dont get me wrong, I enjoy some of the newer riffs on The Matrix and the Phantom Menace...but I'd prefer it if they'd mix it up a bit more. Maybe for every newer movie they riff, do an older cheesy movie. 1:1 ratio or something...

Actually I think a lot of the samples they post are crap, I really don't know who picks them out.
I'm only missing 3 rifftrax so far, all are good. I think the Mike + Guest ones are better though. They do seem to have switched gear slightly to more modern films, I hope they go back to some older films too, like Top Gun.
I think it's a great way to revive the idea.

I think they have been excellent overall. It can't top MST but it isn't trying to be MST. I hope Mike keeps them coming for years to come.

As with anything like this there are going to be good rifftrax and bad rifftrax. You just can't hit a home run every time you come up to bat! Sometimes it's the movie, sometimes its the rifftrax but there are already a couple I shouldn't have bothered with and will probably never see again. Cocktail and The Grudge didn't do a thing for me. However, I'd hold Star Trek V and The Fifth Element to almost as good as anything done during MST3K. I'm sure there are people who have their own opinions about what has been great and what has been not so great. This proves to me that Mike and Rifftrax are on the right path, going for a variety of movie styles to reach the widest possible audience.

Disappointed ...really? I like Riff-trax alot. In fact I admit to sort of neglecting my favorite Mst3k episodes (which I have seen over and over and over) in favor of Riff-trax. Maybe it's because I have seen those episodes over and over again. Maybe it's because I miss Mst3k so much and I realise there will never be any new movies. Maybe it's because it's fun to see a Mst3k style attack on the glossy big-budget movies. (Something they couldn't do on their televison show) Sure it's not the same without the bots and the shadows on the bottom of the screen. Heck, I miss Kevin, Mike and Bill working together as a trio (that would be the ultimate Riff-trax!!!) It's also a pain to constantly get up and sync the movie with disambadio or whatever his name is. Still it's the closest thing to a new Mst3k episode as you're likely to get. As I said in another post, I'm a Mistie and I'll always love Mst3k! But I sure am enjoying Riff-Trax! P.S. You didn't find the Star-Trek Riff-Trax clip even the least bit funny?

This isn't supposed to be MST3K. You can't approach it with that mindset. That's probably why you're so disappointed. It's not meant to be MST3K - just a couple of comedy writers commentating on a movie.

I was mildly disappointed as well due to only really liking 3/10 I have (Cocktail, Crossroads & Point Break); but then when I thought about it, there are also quite a few MST3k episodes I really don't care for.
I wouldn't go by those samples on the site, either... they don't really pick the best moments. It's kind of like opposite of what happens with movies that have trailers, where they show most of the good stuff there and the rest of the movie sucks.

I've only watched two so far: Road House and Star Trek V. I've liked them both quite a bit, with Star Trek V being more consistent, but Road House delivering more laugh out loud moments. I have Top Gun and Fifth Element as the next two in the queue and I'm sure I'll end up buying most of them at one point or another.
As far as the samples they post on the website, I will agree that those are not overwhelming. I guess that left me pleasantly surprised with the full product, so maybe it makes sense on some level.

I've seen them all and I've liked them all. I guess I never really thought of them as "new" episodes of MST3K. They are new comedy commentaries by Mike (and Kevin/Bill). MST is MST and RiffTrax is RiffTrax. I like some better than others the same way I like some episodes of MST better than others, but I've still enjoyed them all.

Star Trek V and The Matrix are right up there for me. I am just struggling to find the right version of Fellowship of the Rings, everyone I know has the Extended Version only.
