I've watched half of it so far (got to the Lunch Break) and I give it my thumbs up so far. The riffing is great, and while the host segments need polishing, they had their charm as well.
I'm not sure about the whole "premise" thing they're using for putting Mike, Kevin, and Bill into the situation though. I loved the guy and two robots tortured by mad scientists angle because it was so absurd and had limitless amusment potential. I got a kick out of the whole "just a job" feel they gave the segments, but the whole "All movies must have a commentary track" just didn't do anything for me, since commentary tracks are traditionally meant to be informative, not mocking. I can't help but wonder if that was the best idea they put on the table.
I can't wait to finish it, but I got a few things to take care of, but I give it a thumbs up.

I thought the riffing was great on Hollywood After Dark. All the comments about the guy being depressed were great. It was strange not having the silhouettes. The host segment where they had their lunch meeting could have easily been done with Crow and Servo on the SOL instead of Kevin and Bill. It was almost as if they wrote it that way and just played it without the puppets. Also, did anyone notice that this was shot in Minneapolis in 2005 using a lot of the production crew from MST3K? Does that mean we'll only get the movies they shot back then and nothing new since Mike now lives in San Diego?

On my second viewing, it 'clicked' for me, and now I feel like I'm back at home on the SOL, circa Seasons 9-10 that is.
I'd say, for their first offering, this is pretty good. I agree that they need to get some of the bugs out, but I have faith they will accomplish this.
My only misgiving is, I thought they went a little heavy on the jokes about Rue McClanahan being undesirable. I mean, the woman is still out there, fellas. She was no more 'mediocre' looks-wise, than any number of otherwise attractive women were made to look in movies of this ilk. I thought they beat it into the ground a little, considering Rue is still making the rounds.
Otherwise: Welcome back, I say!

One other note. The 'studio' scenes (like the Lunch Break) do seem pretty lame, but try this: Close your eyes and just listen. I was shocked -- SHOCKED, I tell you -- how really close it sounds to SOL sketches from the Season 8-10 years. I'm serious, there's almost no difference.
It pointed out to me, what a difference it makes to the dialogue, when it's being played out by puppets on a stage. It actually WAS funnier with my eyes closed!
Try it, it's fun!

Riffing-wise: Twas great. Host segment wise... eh. Overall: Well-worth the money and I will continue to buy them all!

I happened to have to go to Barnes and Nobles today and whom do I see but Rue McClanahan doing photo ops .. I had to keep in step with a youngster so I missed any chance to at least watch the book signing or whatever it was. As a promo for this DVD? Wow. I enjoyed it. I rented it from Netflix, and watched it 3 times over a 10 day period. I did my best to tell myself "This is not MST3K..this is not MST3K...this is not MST3K..." in order to have a more open mind. Sure, it's many of the same people, very similar humor, but c'mon, it's not MST3K. There never will be another MST3K. But this was entertaining enough in itself imho.

I doubt Rue was there to promote the Film Crew. I doubt she's even aware of its existance.

Actually I would be surprised if she didn't have some idea.

Actually I would be surprised if she didn't have some idea. Do you know something special that we don't, sir? Yeah, but not about Rue I just assume she has some sort of agent working for her, especially if she is out doing signings for some project/book/DVD, someone must have mentioned it by now.

I ordered mine from Deep Discount on July3. Didn't show up till yesterday (Jul 28)! I thought it might have got lost in the mail or something, not DDD's shining moment for sure.
Anyway, I popped it in last night and thought it was real funny. I liked Kevin's 'Brian Dennehy on a dragon'! I think the comments here about the movie being Coleman Francis-y are right on. If Coleman Francis had directed The Girl In Gold Boots, I think it would look something like Hollywood After Dark.

^ It was on back-order from DD at the time (and and many other e-tailers like amazon.com as well). Like the recent Monster Squad SE that came out, demand was much more than the supply. Sounds like these are pretty good (and I'm betting on the second one being better than Hollywood After Dark). I will have to test one out.

Finally got a chance to watch Hollywood After Dark last night and I had a great time with it. Yeah, like a lot of people were saying, the sketches were kind of on the weak side, but I still really enjoyed this. I'll definitely be picking up more as they come out.

Ok- I watched Hollywood After Midnight
HILARIOUS. The guys have not missed a beat. The "host segments" are just "ok"- although still better then many of the Bobo ones.
The weird thing is that every once in a while I would notice there were no silhouettes and instantly think they had left the theatre and a break was coming!
Talk about being conditioned!
All in all - I loved it and cannot wait for the next one!
