I like Muse. Good musicianship, emotional, and they don't mind wearing their influences on their sleeves. In the past, they've been compared to Radiohead, if Radiohead wanted to, you know...rock and play guitar solos. On this album, though, the Radiohead comparisons are far fewer. When I first saw the album cover, I thought, "Cool. Looks like something ELO would do." When I first heard the opening bars of "Uprising" (the first song), I thought, "Wow. Sounds like something ELO would do." In fact, it sounds like something ELO has done (the groove is the long-lost twin to "Turn to Stone"). As the album goes on, the glam-rock influences pick up and there is more than one moment that screams, "All hail Queen!" Ultimately, Matthew Bellamy writes a great melody and arranges great instrumental complexity. And on this album, he revels in his classical training and influence, and I love it (the 3-part symphony that ends the disc is worth the price of the CD, and "United States of Eurasia" is simply epic). It's percussive, pretty, powerful, peaceful, and most of all, pompous. Which is just what I want my progressive-glam-britpop-classical-metal-anthem band to be. When I was 14 I discovered thrash metal. A little-known band out of Pennsylvania called Believer was my favorite, by far. They used odd time signatures, combined classical elements and complexity with the old-fashioned "chugging on the E-string" (long before anyone else was doing it), and they had the most amazing drummer ever. They put out 3 albums and disappeared in 1993. I just found out last week that they released a new album this spring. I grabbed a copy before I even put my pants on. It's as good as anything they've ever done, largely because production values have caught up with their talent. I know there are a lot of folks around here who are into the heavier stuff, and if you're one of those people, do yourself a favor. Go on Amazon or iTunes and give Believer a listen. They are simply amazing.

(Forgot about this thread!) Very solid album - several great songs on here. "Here We Are Again," (beautiful song) "Simple Prayer," (very funny and clever, lyrically and musically) and "Invisible" (simple, but can't get it out of my head!) should all be hits, in my opinion. "Black Rats of London" and "In The Low Country" are great, too. In my opinion, its Bruce's most consistent album since "Hot House" in '96. Very much recommended. Very relaxing and well-produced album (that's a strong talent of hers), but not close to the level of excellence that her last album "Speak For Yourself" reached. Not many memorable melodies here, with the exceptions of a few songs including "First Train Home" and "Earth". "Earth" has some impressive vocal layering and harmonies, something Imogen again has a knack for. "Wait It Out" is also a solid song, though it had to grow on me. I can't fully recommend the album due to the lack of strong songs, but as a whole, its certainly not unpleasant or bad. I guess I was just spoiled too much from her last album!

As I stated in another thread, i came across a deal I couldn't refuse. Three big Rubbermaid containers full of LPs, for $20.00. The containers were worth that!
273 albums with some repeats. That's... 7.32 cents per album!
Now I just need to record them into MP3s, and put them on an I-pod. That should take me about...8 years.
I've put them on an excel spreadsheet, and alphabetized them: I'm familiar with most of the artists, but some are complete unknowns to me. Let me know if you see any gems. One I can't wait to listen to (we don't have the turntable hooked up yet) is the Soundtrack to Times Square, with various artists of the early punk/new wave scene.
Wikipedia was a great help. Sometimes I couldn't tell the album title from the artist's name...

My bad.
The early years of digital alpha-numerics left a lot to be desired...
"Yes" it is.

By the way, there were two MST-associated albums in that long list.

First Polvo album in over a decade. Bought the album as a download from Merge Records. Haven't had time to listen yet but I've read it's as good as anything they've ever done. A great, quirky rock band.

Karl Denson's Tiny Universe had a free concert at Music Millennium. I got both CDs signed by the whole band. God, I love independent music stores. Buy these, as well as The Bridge. It's great, funky fun. I'm now only three albums away from owning the entire Tom Waits songbook. I pretty sure that's a great danger to my sanity, if only I actually had any sanity left. Oily Night almost made me crap my pants.

Resurrecting the thread because I finally got ahold of this: Renaissance: Scheherezade and Other StoriesI was recommended this album by a board member quite a while back, and finally tracked down a copy. After a couple listens, it's as good as I'd hoped, particularly "Ocean Gypsy" and the side-long epic "Song of Scheherezade." Great stuff, ranging from folk to symphonic rock with orchestra and choir backing. Glad I made the purchase.

Oily Night almost made me crap my pants. Oily Night is bloody terrifying isn't it? The voices freak me out. I'm not someone who skips songs on albums so I tend to make excuses like a bathroom break or getting a drink just to miss it!

Peggy Lee -- 2 Shows Nightly
Peggy at the Copa. This album is legendary in music history. The night before it's scheduled release, she pulled it. (She was notoriously picky about the sound mix.) Ergo, the only copies out in the world were promo copies.
Finally, through negotiations with her estate, the entire set is released! I plan to listen to it later this evening.
