I don't. I would change the station. Not to be a stick in the mud but I second that. Sorry, Mr. A. I third it. As for that list, there's even a couple of bands I outright loathe. Although I have gotten over my teenage dream of REO Speedwagon dying a flaming painful death. ;D

I think I know what the criteria for this is. These acts have had considerable commercial success but not a lot of critical acclaim. They obviously have a lot of respect from their fans but not from the music press... ...I don't think this list has anything to do with musical ability. I mean, I don't like Rush but I can't deny their musical skill. I think this is the crux of it, as well. From that list, some I wouldn't change the station if their song came on (ELO, ABBA, Bon Jovi), but as for others, I'd rather hear nothing than the sound of their music (i.e. Britney Spears, Wham, Journey, Eddie Money, Air Supply). The only one I own a record by is The Monkees, and that's a "best of". I like Michael Nesmith's solo work, too. Rush, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, etc may be talented and skilled, but if it doesn't speak to me or move me, then meh...who cares?

I don't think this list has anything to do with musical ability. I mean, I don't like Rush but I can't deny their musical skill. But that's not enough, I have to like the song and the overall effect. And for the acts listed, they just don't do it for me. So, does this mean that we don't get to have another set of Rush wars? Anyways, I hate lists such as these because they reflect the silly musical tastes of mainstream asshats. In all reality, no one should ever feel guilty about anything they enjoy listening to. No one person and/or group of people should ever be counted on to decide what's "hot" or "phat" or "pimpin'". We all like what we like. So, if you like to crank ABBA, screw it, do it. And don't worry who hears you singing along. It never bothers me to cruise around in the Trans Am with the windows down belting out "Turn to Stone" or "Tiny Dancer". So, screw it. Go out now and cruise for a little while and sing your favorite "guilty" song as loud as you damn well please. Til next time, rock on. Servo

Well said TS.
I personally like ABBA a bit, and I really don't need anyone tell me it's a "guilty pleasure". It's not guilty if you don't feel it is.

I'm especially fond of Honky Chateau and the version of "Madman Across the Water" that's on the remastered copy of Tumbleweed Connection is amazing. I'll go so far as to say it's much better that the version on the album of the same name. Servo

It's like enjoying a bad movie, or even a not-so-bad-but-still-silly movie.

Maybe in some circles, but, I'd give you a crisp $100 bill if you could walk around this town and find more than 5 people who could name more than one Rush, ELO, America, Wham or Chicago song.

I own Kelly Clarkson's second album and LOVE the Monkees! And Kansas wrote some classics (Dust in the Wind). As with Mr. A - I have no guilt and agree with TS69. If you love it, sing it out loudly and proudly.

So are you saying that the acts on this list are "underground" or "little known" bands? I don't think I said anything to disregard anyone's music taste but the list provided here is overtly mainstream. I don't know about your town but these acts constitute a huge chunk of cooperate mainstream radio. What "circles" are you talking about?

I also wonder about the qualifications for this list. Some bands listed are made up of great, great musicians (Chicago, Rush, ELO, Boston, Hall & Oates); whereas others were aided by studio tricks (Britney, the Monkees, etc). Not that it matters (I like the Monkees), but it seems that proficiency wasn't a standard of judgment. I think it's just a list of bands that- for some reason- are assessed by the culture as "cheesy". But I challenge any current artist to write a song as good as "Don't Stop Believin'" or "Livin' on a Prayer" or "You Are the Sun" or even "Careless Whisper". In fact, while I'm an unapologetic fan of some of these artists (RUSH, ELO, Hall & Oates, Lionel Richie, the Monkees), I think nearly all of them have something quite impressive on their resume. I mean, who doesn't sing along to "I Wanna Know What Love Is" or "Carry On My Wayward Son" when they come on the radio? Almost all of these bands have a song or two that deserve mention in the "Great Driving Music" thread. Great, now I'm all worked up. Well said MR. Atari, I thought guilty pleasure bands were like Bay City Rollers or Barry Manilow or some like that(when i was young I had 8 tracks of both of these performers). I hate Rolling Stone Magazine anyway. Many of the bands they hated(Jethro Tull for one ;D) are some of my favorites.

But, most radio stations here play only crappy new music. I rarely here any Rush song but "Tom Sawyer" on the radio or any Hall and Oates song other than "Maneater". Just saying that around here the radio is a little stale as far as their selection. Guess it's just me. Good argument as usual Phantom. It's good to be back at it again dear brother. Servo
