Joy Division's "Unknown Pleasures" is another fantastic debut. (Pretty much everything from that band was amazing IMO) Preach it, brother. Although the first Smiths album is probably not my favorite of theirs (that honor would go to The Queen Is Dead), it's still a brilliant record with many of their best songs -- "Hand In Glove," their first single, is easily one of the best songs in their canon, IMHO. I also love "This Charming Man," "Pretty Girls Make Graves," and "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle." Nick Cave's first solo record, From Her To Eternity, is also very good, particularly the title track, "A Box For Black Paul" and his cover of Leonard Cohen's "Avalanche." Again, probably not my favorite album of his overall (that would either be Let Love In or Your Funeral My Trial), but a fantastic debut, especially considering he had a tough act to follow in his brilliant former band, The Birthday Party. Oh, and The Fall's Live at the Witch Trials also deserves a mention. "Rebellious Jukebox" is one of their best songs.

I almost listed "Live At The Witch Trials" but it's not my fave by them... It's sort of "new wavey," quite different from what they went on to do. Still very good though!

Off the top of my head, Van Halen definately had a good debut album, with some great songs. Nevermind was great at the time and still holds up today. The Ramones though I think top them with songs like Blitzkreig Bop, Beat on the Brat, 53rd and 3rd", Judy is a Punk, and I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend.

Cracker - Cracker Pixies - Come On Pilgrim Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine Sugar - Copper Blue Smashing Pumpkins - Gish
It should be easy to tell what era I come from, right?
I really should include the first Foo Fighters album as well as Frank Black's self-titled debut. They're both great efforts.

Nevermind was great at the time and still holds up today. Wait, thought about it for a second, and forgot this wasn't their first actual studio album.
