Thought I would start a thread to have music lovers list their Top 5 Desert Island songs. Note that I didn't say singles, because that's way too constrictive.
Also, please write a couple of sentences about why it's important to you and why it would be vital to your survival.

- The Ronettes: "Be My Baby" Phillies (1963)
Though I'm only 31, this song has strong meaning to me back to my teenage years. I got the "Back To Mono" box for Christmas ('91?) and was really enamoured with Phil Spector. This is considered by some the best single ever, for good reason. - The Beach Boys: "God Only Knows" Capitol (1966)
Again, tying back to my early adult hood when I heard "Pet Sounds" for the 1st time. I heard the BB's in a whole new context with Wilson's Spector fixation, the Wrecking Crew, Gold Star studios...all of it. It stops me every time I hear it. - The Jackson 5: "ABC" Motown (1970)
I very much love most Motown related recordings from approx 1961-1971 that utilized the Funk Brothers as the backing. The Jackson 5, however, ushered in a new era at Motown (in L.A., not Detroit) and used The Corporation™. This song is undeniably one of the catchiest 3 minutes ever to come out of a set of speakers and/or headphones. Mimicing heavily the previous hit "I Want You Back", "ABC" one-up's that song by simply using that songs chorus in a loop. Sweet a sugar. Also, it must (in my opinion) be listened to only in it's mono 45 RPM version easily found on various Motown comps. - The Clash: "Train In Vain (Stand By Me)" Epic (1980)
I think, the last song recorded for "London Calling" and in some ways an afterthought from the record itself. Such a catchy song that has been lifted and used for backing to other hits ("Stupid Girl" by Garbage comes to mind). - The La's: "There She Goes" Go!/London (1990)
I first heard this on 120 Minutes in probably 1991 (?) and thought it was the best song I had ever heard. It was the Beatles, Byrds (among others) all captured perfectly in a modern pop song. I still lust after the blonde from the video...
