Personally, I really dont care about back story or skits...... I know who they are. Yes. The right people will know who they are. If Joel wants to expand on the premise, he can.

I don't really care about the lack of storyline or characters, but I do think there should be an opening. Even if it's just one of the cast explaining that they riff bad movies. It's a bit jarring to start with the movie rolling and have them go at it with no intro whatsoever.

"Where's the premise?" Premise Beach!!! What if!!! What if a man ran for public office who really shouldn't have bothered! Premise! [Cut to scene with a Politician talking to someone.] Politician: Well, I won't take up anymore of your time. I just hope that I can count on your vote come election day. Thank you. [The Politician puts his hand out so that the man can shake it, but the Politician's hand is a slab of meat. The man shakes it] [Cut back to the beach] Get it? He doesn't stand a chance in hell! He's got a meat hand! Surf's up on... Premise Beach! Premise!

Joel seems to have abandoned his strong suit (quirky ideas, charm, and inventiveness), and instead presents us with yet another riffing outlet, offering nothing new (save for a modified Shadorama setup) and relying most heavily on "star power" to carry the day. Given that a high percentage of the CT crew really earned their keep doing skits and host segments (Trace being the lone exception) I'm quite surprised they've set that all aside to create a purely riff-oriented project.
I dunno, it's just more fulfilling somehow to describe MST3K as being about "a guy trapped in space with 2 robots, etc." than simply "people make fun of bad movies." I agree it's not the end of the world, but a missed opportunity nonetheless.

While the riffing was top-notch im going to have a hard time continuing to pay $13-16 dollars for each video. Rifftrax is very cheap when you can get the movie from netflix. Not trying to start a flamewar, but when you like both, your going to tend to get the more affordable one.
Hopefully they will start doing segments of some type...

It's a bit jarring to start with the movie rolling and have them go at it with no intro whatsoever. An introduction at the beginning would be nice, I agree. It would probably take 30 seconds and the rest of the show could remain exactly like it is. But to be honest, the lack of premise bothered me less and less on repeat viewings. Maybe I was just getting more comfortable with the format.

They keep referring to it as the pilot... which suggests "not the final version of how we're gonna do things necessarily, but a pretty good representation of what we're gonna do".
I could be wrong.

Let's face it. The idea of the "guy sent into orbit, he & his robots keep sane by mocking the movies they're forced to watch" is gonna be hard to beat. Any attempt to devise a similar premise will be tough. If Joel were start giving out bits & pieces of his yet unknown premise, if he has one, could work as a way to slowly divulge the reasons why these people are doing what they're doing. That's why I mentioned "Lost" before.
Example: The next episode starts as CT001 did, but at some point an alarm goes off. The crew calmly starts to file out. Now, we see them filing out of a cave (Bronson Canyon?) in their matching wool suits, with M-16 rifles in hand. Each takes a position, aiming in the sky at things we can't see. They calmly start firing, making small talk, expertly dropping & changing clips, until whatever was attacking retreats.
Mary Jo:(calmly) What a bunch of wimps.
Trace: I need to adjust my iron sights.
And they calmly re-enter and continue. Nothing else is said.
But if you're bent on a premise, next week's contest may include an opportunity to come up with one...

Let's face it. The idea of the "guy sent into orbit, he & his robots keep sane by mocking the movies they're forced to watch" is gonna be hard to beat. I thought the same thing. Watching the first CT was enjoyable, but also made me even more appreciative of MST3K. It really is perfect--The Mad Scientists are a fun/goofy way of explaining why you must watch bad movies, they're a great outlet for invention exchanges, they fit right in with the B-Movie feel, plus Frank and Trace just played them off so well. The trapped in space with robots thing is also great--what do you do when you're trapped inside on a rainy day? Watch crappy old movies on TV! The robots are a great way of giving a character voice to the riffs and also allow for great skits because they're robots that need to have our worlds idiosyncrasies explained to them. The whole thing really is close to perfect. Having said that, though, it leads me back to my original post--we have here all the people that came up with that super-great-fun premise. Why not another?!

New here but I have a thought on this subject:
Why not let Joel and the gang evolve the project as they see fit and enjoy it or not, as you see fit? This "constructive criticism" seems not only premature but presumptuous. I can't imagine it didn't occur to any of these bright and talented people to do host segments a la MST3K. It just feels like some think they know better than the titans, and that's just so odd. Given their track record, I trust them to do the right thing, and hope that they are feeling creatively fulfilled and having fun doing it, even if that thing isn't MST3K reincarnated. When they are left to their own devices, good things will happen. Good, no great things have happened.
In short, I'm enjoying the hell out of the show as is, even if all hasn't been revealed to me yet, even if it may never be revealed. It's a whole new ballgame, and I've adjusted my expectations and opened my mind accordingly, and bite me-- it's fun! Let go and let Joel (and Trace and Frank and Josh and Mary Jo).

kryptos, welcome to the board. I don't mean to be too negative, but your post seems to me a little fanboyish/defensive. The people in this thread are just discussing their thoughts and feelings about the first CT release, including some things they thought it lacked. I don't see any posts here condeming CT. In fact, I take constructive criticism as a sign that people DO enjoy what you are doing and want more and want to help make it (in their opinion, of course) better. You are entitled to your opinion, but so are we.

Let's hope that the premise is slowly revealed over the course of the next installments. I mean, I know that the thing that came down at the end was the Time Tube, but MSTies who haven't obsessively been following the news are gonna be like "What is that thing, and why is Joel putting a disc into it?" It might not even necessarily be clear to some that he's putting the movie they just watched in there. I just want this venture to be really successful for them, and to do that a premise is necessary to have it all make some sense to The Unenlightened. The movie doesn't have to make sense, but the reason they're all there should.
That being said, I loved Oozing Skull and plan on keeping up with the rest. I've already watched it like five times in the past few days!
