I agree with BoB3K on the matter of speaking our opinions. Sp here's mine:
Like 90% of you have said, the lack of a premise is kind of distracting. It makes my mind wnader during the show as to what is going on. Love the riffing, it was all good but why are they there, why is the scaffolding set up the way it is, why this why that. It's too confusing.
It made me think too, MST3K was brilliant, and when I talk about it, I often say the strongest part of the show was always theatre segments. But CT reminds me that without the host segments the show would have been weird and probably not as well recieved. It's funny because a lot of people say they didnt like the host segments, but without them its just some guy, and some freaky looking things talking at a screen. Confusing.
I think we need some non-shadowrama pieces to complete it. Obviously I like the shadowrama bits and being a fan I know who's who and all that, but I feel i cant show this to my friends because they dont. my mom knows a lot about the show and had to ask who was who a lot. i think a few moments where we could actually SEE them might help that. Viewers unfamiliar with these guys could become familiar, otherwise they are always shadow people and voices.
I also agree with the general concensus that the brilliant minds working on this could surely come up with something much more extravagant than what they have now. Wheteher they decide to or not is up to them, but I think in general most of us are in agreement it needs more.

Nicely said, Katie. And since I can't say it as well, I'll add my "ditto" to the whole thing (or an ibid if you prefer).

Example: The next episode starts as CT001 did, but at some point an alarm goes off. The crew calmly starts to file out. Now, we see them filing out of a cave (Bronson Canyon?) in their matching wool suits, with M-16 rifles in hand. Each takes a position, aiming in the sky at things we can't see. They calmly start firing, making small talk, expertly dropping & changing clips, until whatever was attacking retreats. Mary Jo:(calmly) What a bunch of wimps. Trace: I need to adjust my iron sights. And they calmly re-enter and continue. Nothing else is said. This is so absurd that I can actually see them doing this.. and you know what?! I friggin' lolled. Let's hope our in-guy Josh sees this one and runs it back to the Titans for consideration. Too funny...

At the beginning of each... what should we call it? Episode? Experiment? Movie?... movie, a few of them stroll in with some odd props and/or making cryptic comments. "Geez, those meatballs in the parking lot were terrible today." "Yeah, you don't often see 'em with legs and fangs like that." Or: "Sorry I'm late, guys, I had to go the long way. The highway was closed because of all the smoke." "Really? Damn. I still wonder what idiot thought it was a good idea to teach bears how to make fire." "Nah, didn't you hear? They just kinda evolved all at once, over the last year or something."

otherwise they are always shadow people and voices. And, shadow people just sound all scary and stuff even though we know they're not scary. Don't we? I don't really know what Shadow-Frank does in his off hours--the shadow hours...mwa ha ha ha...okay, sorry, I'm way off script. I agree that any random "out-of-movie" riffs would help at least build their characters. I was thinking that if they must stay with all shadowrama, there's still no reason they can't pause the film and do non-movie related stuff, like a picnic table rises up in the middle of the screen and they all go over and have a "lunch break" a la The Film Crew where they have a little chat about something silly. I wouldn't be suprised if this kind of thing IS in the plans--it's a natural extention of what they did in 01. (Edit: MAN, I'm terrible about spelling they as the.)

Let's face it. The idea of the "guy sent into orbit, he & his robots keep sane by mocking the movies they're forced to watch" is gonna be hard to beat. Any attempt to devise a similar premise will be tough. If Joel were start giving out bits & pieces of his yet unknown premise, if he has one, could work as a way to slowly divulge the reasons why these people are doing what they're doing. That's why I mentioned "Lost" before. And they calmly re-enter and continue. Nothing else is said. But if you're bent on a premise, next week's contest may include an opportunity to come up with one... By the way, I misread the Contest schedule. Next month when I host, the prize will be the initial CT DVD, generously donated by Pumaman2. I don't know where I came up with the whole cave/M16 idea. Probably playing too much Grand Theft Auto lately... Edit: Speaking of generosity, I mentioned that I hadn't purchased any Film Crew releases yet, in another thread. Callipygias PM'd me, and is sending me an extra copy he had! Score! Thanks again Calli!

New here but I have a thought on this subject: Why not let Joel and the gang evolve the project as they see fit and enjoy it or not, as you see fit? This "constructive criticism" seems not only premature but presumptuous. I can't imagine it didn't occur to any of these bright and talented people to do host segments a la MST3K. It just feels like some think they know better than the titans, and that's just so odd. Given their track record, I trust them to do the right thing, and hope that they are feeling creatively fulfilled and having fun doing it, even if that thing isn't MST3K reincarnated. When they are left to their own devices, good things will happen. Good, no great things have happened. In short, I'm enjoying the hell out of the show as is, even if all hasn't been revealed to me yet, even if it may never be revealed. It's a whole new ballgame, and I've adjusted my expectations and opened my mind accordingly, and bite me-- it's fun! Let go and let Joel (and Trace and Frank and Josh and Mary Jo). I don't think that sounded "fanboyish/defensive" at all, in fact I think he makes a good point. I get the fact that people around here are creative by nature and can't help themselves from imagining possibilities, but I too trust that Joel and Co. will do just fine with whatever they are considering. They probably don't need our help I look forward to the evolution of CT. Remember what we were all doing this time last year? I'm pretty sure I had just discovered Rifftrax in December '06 and thought it was manna from heaven to have ANY riffing again. What a difference a year makes, eh?

Callipygias PM'd me, and is sending me an extra copy he had! Score! Thanks again Calli! Believe me, it's more absent-mindedness than generosity, Bix. Too bad I only screwed up and double-ordered one, huh? Next time I'll try to be even dumber.

Yes, I think it is way too early to make any critical judgments about CT. I'm on board for whatever is next and where ever it is headed. I am sure that a back-story was discussed for the pilot and for whatever reason it was decided to not have one. Maybe they were waiting to see what the reaction was going to be. I don't really know. All I know is that it was a bit bothersome to me not to have an intro of some sort.
With Rifftrax it's simpler. It's a comedy commentary track and nothing more is implied. Anyone who isn't familiar with MST3K is going to get up to speed quickly because if you own DVD's you know what a commentary track is all about and Rifftrax is almost immediately understandable. With CT you have the silhouettes of people and more is implied. If I didn't know about MST3K I would be asking some questions immediately. As Mel Brooks would say, "What the h__l is this?" Why are they there? What is a Cinematic Titanic? A bone must be thrown!

You didn't happen to double order any Playstation 3s, Calli? Because if you have one uselessly cluttering up your house...

I don't think that sounded "fanboyish/defensive" at all, in fact I think he makes a good point. I thought he made some good points, too. But I also thought comments like these: "This 'constructive criticism' seems not only premature but presumptuous", "It just feels like some think they know better than the titans", "and bite me" where a little fanboy/densive. He didn't just state his opinions, he stated his opinions while belittling others opinions, just a bit.
