I was thinking about the success of CT and I wondered if MST3K could do something like that.
The story. The SOL never crashed into earth because Gypsy tricked everyone. She invented a transporter and used it to transport M&TB to earth. But the transporter never really worked right so she took some special parts and left. Dr. F finds the SOL and uses the transporter to get back at people, but its got two problems. People only stay for a while and then bounce back and he doesn't always get who he sent for.
How it works. Each episode get a different cast with at least two bad guys and three good guys. Episode one gets Dr. F, Frank, Joel, Crow (by trace) and Tom (by Kevin). Episode two gets Dr. F, Mrs. F (who sets up the transporter to get brain guy and bobo in later episodes), Mike, Kevin and Trace.
Every episode mixes and matches the characters a different way.
You could have episodes with Joel, Mike and Crow or two Crows and a servo or two servos and a crow, or the all sidekick ep, Frank, Bobo and Brain Guy. It all depends on who can make it to the tapings that week.
Key points.
1) Every movie and short must be locked up for a long time, so that they can continue to sell it for years.
2) Episodes can be of different lengths. I'd suggest starting with a few 22 minute episodes, consisting of and opening segment, a short and a closing segment.
3) The episodes are available as downloads or burn on demand to keep costs down.
4) The show is self financed where everyone gets a cut.
5) All three sites advertise for each other and CT and Rifftrac's get a plug during the show, when at least one actor from the show appears in the ep.
6) Multiple episodes are filmed at once. If the set is set up for a week, they could have a few people there all week but have some fly in for one day and film one or two. If they do a couple of 1/2 hour eps a day, you could get 8 or 10 done in a week. This would keep the costs down with maximum input from the most cast members. That way, you could film enough in a couple of weeks for an entire year, if you release them once every 3 weeks or so.
7) If they had an inventory of say 40 shorts and 10 full length movies, they could sell them to tv. The TV could show them as a weekly show with one special 2 hour movie every month or so. Tv would get a relatively cheap show. They probably could have sold it during the strike when the networks were desperate for shows.
Advantages of this.
All of the crew can do it part time so it won't interfere with their other projects. Riff Trac can write a short in less than a week.
Mike and crew could even repackage a Riff Trac, if they could get the rights.
Once they've got enough episodes done, they might be able to sell it to TV, especially in a half hour format.
Cross selling could increase sales on all three projects.
Because every episode has a different cast, and its done on the internet, they can experiment more.
What do you think sirs?
