I just started watching Revenge of the Creature again, and after the opening segment I had some thoughts I've had before. What if the apes and their lab had remained the new premise of the show? We could have discovered that Dr. Forrester was actually the Lawgiver. Some experiment or another had given rise to the apes, and so all these years later he was very nearly worshipped. While researching him, Prof. Bobo and (Dr.) Peanut discovered in his notes that one of his longest-running experiments had never been concluded, and devised a way to recall M&TB to the SOL, and back to Earth to continue his work. This would've kept close to the original concept of two guys, er, apes, holding a man captive in space and forcing bad movies on him. The very first interactions between Bobo and Peanut seem very similar to Dr. F and Frank to me.
I apologize if something similar has been discussed in the past. Also, this is NOT intended to bash the characters of Pearl, Bobo and Observer, and the show's premise in those years. Those characters are funny in their own right and I like them.

Hmmm. I try not to think to hard about these things. The t.v. has fried my brain through the years and I need to leave what little brain cells I have left to enjoying my 20s.

I'd like to know what storylines they'd have come up with if Joel, Frank and Trace has stayed on the writing team.

Hehe... ah, yes, my 20's. MST3K's run nicely coincided with my 3rd decade (which more or less coincided with the entire run of the show)
I have to admit, while I initially though "oh boy, here we go, another far-fetched fan-boy theory on what 'could have been,'" this actually isn't a bad premise. It could have worked (if the apes managed to be a bit more "Evil") but there are, of course, a few reasons it wouldn't be green-lit:
1. Gotta get Pearl in there somewhere. Granted, her being the "lawgiver" is just as good, with the Apes taking dual roles as Frank, and Frank Jr.
2. Demands for story arc, per Sci-Fi Channel execs. While we at home might not have minded if they stayed in Ape-land indefinitely, the station required that they keep things moving. Hence they never really stayed in any one setting for more than a handful of episodes.
3. That awful makeup! It's probably safe to say that the other actors in the monkey suits would have had a hard time keeping it up for 3 entire seasons (except of course Kevin, who simply stopped shaving 6 hours before shooting started, in order to get into character as "Bobo")
