Any recommendations on DVD-ripping software?
I'm not intending to pirate anything. I need to get some clips for a presentation I'm doing on Saturday, and need to know how to get the video in a format I can edit.
I thought about playing the DVD into my video camera, then grabbing that video as an .avi, but I'm sure there's an easier way.
Thanks.

Just getting clips is not as easy as it should be. Most rippers are set up to rip the entire DVD. Then you need to edit it down. Unless there have been some breakthroughs since I stopped keeping track nothing to do with video editing is as easy as you would want. Doing video on computer is the best way in the long run but the stand alone units are way easier. I recently bought a Panasonic DVR with a hard drive. Not as flexible as a computer but way easier.

I don't mind ripping the whole DVD first- I have the time. Is there good freeware out there that'll do it for me?

DVD Decrypter is very good. (A quick search for it should find a number of download sites.)

I love DVD Decrypter, but I don't think you can edit down clips with it. Do you already have a video editor?

So I used DVD Decrypter and it seemed to work.
One problem: The file types are all .IFO, .VOB, and .BUP files. How can I convert them to a usable .mpg or DivX?
The online guides I found all say that such conversions are possible with the software, but none of them say how.
Edited to add: Never mind, guys. I figured it out. I had to download additional software, but I got it. Thanks for your help.

I got the free version of "imTOO" DVD ripper. It could convert the DVD to .avi, .mpg, or .wmv. With the free version, I could only convert 5 minutes at a time, but that worked for what I needed.
