If you have broadband and a decent hard drive or a DVD burner, I'd suggest a look at DAP ( www.dapcentral.org/). They have all the MST3K episodes that haven't been released yet in DVD and/or avi format. That ought to help you out until you can afford to buy the official releases. Also, there are a lot of clips up on Youtube.

And I envy you--you still have a lot of episodes you haven't see, right? All those great laughs still await you.
I'm still missing a few year 1 and KTMA eps, myself. And Beginning of th End, which now that Sky can sell it again (http://www.mst3kvideos.com/episodes.htm) is next on my list.
I have only four eps I've never yet seen and I own them, but I'm doling them out slowly to myself.

My DVD collection contains the first ten Rhino box sets, as well as most of the single releases (save for "Manos" and "Beginning of the End"), The Essentials, and the "Giant Gila Monster" single disc. As for my stuff from Skyroniter, I have everything from KTMA through Season 7, along with MST3K: The Movie and a few random special features (Turkey Day bumpers, MST3K Hour segments, network promos, etc.). I'll collect Seasons 8 through 10 eventually, but they're not "must-haves" for me.

I started out recording experiments in the early 90s and exchanging them with friends. I bought a Moon Zero Two VHS from an internet trader around 1996 or so and he put Human Duplicators and some Rocky Jones nightmare on it as well. Then I started buying Rhino DVDs piecemiel like I Accuse My Parents, and some Rhino VHS like the shorts, Unearthly, etc. I later got almost all of the box sets except 10 and 12, and bought about 75 exp. from Skyroniter (whom I highly recommend - http://www.mst3kvideos.com).
Now I have 117 exp. on DVD; have seen about 125 or so; and still haven't seen many that are discussed often like King Dinosaur, Werewolf, Daddy O, Time of the Apes, etc. It gives me something to work towards and look forward to.
I think you'll get bored if you try to start with Season 0 or 1 and work forward. It takes too long to get to holy grail experiments like Puma, Gold Boots, Boggy, Final Justice, Space Mutiny, etc.
Anyway thank heavens for Mr. Skyroniter.

I am seriously considering ordering the entire KTMA set. It just seems like its something every fan should own. Would you recommend them?

Well if they're something you think every fan should own anyway, then you should go for it. Just don't expect them to be super hilarious. They weren't really writing the jokes then, just saying whatever popped in their head so they can be really hit and miss...with a lotta miss from what I've seen.
So if you don't have a lot of episodes under your belt it might not be the best thing to start with, but if you think you can handle it, do it! ;D

I currently have an order on the way from skyroniter. I also took advice from MSTJedi and downloaded a couple of episodes from dapcentral. I put the .avi episodes on my PSP, MST3K on the go, nice. But for my collection, I'll be ordering everything from Cheney Monster. The few Ive got from Rhino have quality issues, 3 out of 5 times I start one of the DVDs, I get a whooping sound like the disk is not balanced. Its the only DVD I have that does it. Another DVD from them looses the sound from the opening music until the movie starts. I miss the MADS interaction with Joel.

I started casually recording in 1991 and collected about 30 episodes before I had to leave for college. Used those first-gen broadcast tapes to trade quite a bit after a few years and ended up putting together a substantial collection of episodes before I just didn't have time to dub and ship anymore.
Started going through the trouble of recording SciFi episodes after I rediscovered the show a few years later and gathered most of seasons 8, 9 and 10.
Just a few years ago, water pipe broke and damaged a lot of my originals and old trades. So I bit the bullet and started ordering from a reputable trader. I currently own five Rhino collections, a few random Rhino single episode discs and seasons KTMA through seven. I do kind of miss the actual trading days, though.
And by the way, the KTMA season is interesting if you're looking at it from a historic standpoint. It can be funny at times, but it's more of a window into the past. It's fun, and I do like watching them, but there are far better seasons for straight-up entertainment purposes.
Enjoy your journey through MST3K!

...how long have you been collecting? I didn't start collecting MST3K on DVD until late 2003/early 2004. I didn't even know the series was being released on DVD until then. And I didn't know about Sky until, well...about the time I signed-up here. I am seriously considering ordering the entire KTMA set. It just seems like its something every fan should own. Would you recommend them? Highly. But to be fair, not all MSTies love season zero as much as I do. I very much consider it to be canon. And unlike later seasons, my enjoyment of the episodes has nothing to do with how funny I think the riffs are. And by the way, the KTMA season is interesting if you're looking at it from a historic standpoint. It can be funny at times, but it's more of a window into the past. ^ Exactly. "Humanoid Woman" was my first KTMA...and I was captivated by it. Now, I won't get into how much I love the movie itself because I'm probably starting to annoy people with my never-ending "Humanoid Woman" love fest (I'm one of about three people around here who have the "Humanoid Woman" Appreciation Gene, but the other two don't come around much anymore). Anyhow, my first KTMA was a great experience not only because of the excellent film selection, but the whole feel of the show in general. It's hard to explain...but the short host segments, the laid-back atmosphere, the non-existent budget, the feeling that your witnessing a sort of "lost" season as well as the genesis of something great...all create a mood that's unique to season zero. So...as long as you don't mind the very sparse riffing, I'd pick up the entire season if I were you. And I have to echo what inlovewithcrow said; you're lucky to have so many episodes that'll be brand new to you! I only buy a handful of episodes a year because it's comforting to me to know that it'll be a long time before I've seen it all.

Ah, Furdburns, I remember when I started seriously collecting MST3K. What a summer I had. I bought a new computer and got a cable modem specifically to download the show from the DAP. Skyronitor helped me out quite a bit it the late winter/spring of 2004 with episode tape purchases and recommendations. The summer of 2004 was a feast of fun. At least 2 episodes a week I had never seen before! I don't think I turned my computer off for three months straight. By the late Fall I had burned and watched almost all the available episodes of the show and frankly needed to take a break. I'll never forget that.

I started taping back in '91 and taped regularly up through the 8th season or so. At one point I had every episode on VHS from 101 to 822, but I've lost some tapes along the way in various moves and through them just breaking.
Through dubbing my own tapes to DVD, the Rhino releases (I have them all except for #517), and purchases from Sky; I currently have about 110 episodes on DVD and most of the rest on VHS (other than the KTMA's).

"Mitchell" "The Hellcats" "Red Zone Cuba" "Giant Gila Monster" "The Crawling Hand" "I Accuse My Parents" "The Beginning of the End" "The Brain that Wouldn't Die" "The Wild Wild World of Batwoman"

Just a few quick questions if you dont mind: Were they the only 2 hosts? Where does the Joel/Mike switch take place? Where does the Comedy Central/Sci-Fi Net. switch happen? Yes, just two hosts. Episode 512 is Joel's last. Mike starts with 513. Season 8 was the first on Sci-Fi. Btw, the below is an excellent detailed history of the show. www.mst3kinfo.com/history/index.html
