I was born a poor black child... no, wait. I'm just your basic, average girl, a girl of many shades and dimensions. (Better.) I love to spend time reading, surfing online or watching TV. I like to laugh and make other people laugh, usually using my rapier wit, and I enjoy exercising my inner geek from time to time. I am currently working on writing a book. My real name is Robyn. My hobbies include: random craft projects (beading jewelry, cross-stitch, and the occasional painting), learning different languages (I have a fairly good grasp of German and know a smattering of French), jumping in and out of a British accent, dropping random movie quotes into conversations (which explains the Steve Martin quote above), singing along with the radio, and sleeping in. I have a Bachelor's Degree in English from Liberty University (I think that the full name of the school should be "Liberty University Yes That's Jerry Falwell's School"), and therefore I have a BA in BS, with a double minor in writing papers and avoiding writing papers. I enjoy being an English nerd, and often crack literary jokes (especially Shakespeare), even if I'm the only one who gets them (especially Shakespeare). I currently work as a tutor with an after-school program which provides Supplemental Education Services under the No Child Left Behind Act to kids whose families can't afford a private tutor. I have a group of kids that I adore dearly and a group that I need to figure out how to get to pay attention without smacking them. In addition to that, I answer phones at a realty office here in town every other Saturday. On top of that, I volunteer in my church's junior high ministry as a small group leader and am the director of the 3rd-6th grade AWANA club (though we only have 3rd and 4th graders). So, yeah, that was pretty much everything you've ever wanted to know about me, but were too shy to ask. More to come later...

Well you succeeded in making me laugh with your opening line. In regards to your hobbies, have you ever considered a menu collection? (MJ hopes Robyn saw "Shy Guy" and gets that joke

Sorry, no, and no, but I did once try to collect amusement park maps... it doesn't really work when you only go to one amusement park.

Yes, amusement park maps would be fun to have a lot of. You'd really have to work at it to find lots of amusement parks and to not go broke visiting them, though.

I've got something else planned for this blog later, but first, a good old-fashioned mini-rant:
Today is the second day in a row that someone has been driving stupidly around me, and would have hit me had I not been paying attention. Yesterday someone tried to make a left turn in front of me. Today some genius tried to change lanes in the middle of a left turn (green arrow), and would have sideswiped me (closer to demolished me - he was driving a huge white truck and I a Ford Taurus) if I hadn't hit the brakes. Am I some sort of stupidity magnet?
At this point I'm worried about what'll happen tomorrow...

This whole blogging thing is pretty cool, if I do say so myself. I love hanging out here on the board, and this is a cool chance to let you all know a little more about myself. One of my New Year's resolutions was actually watch more MST3K. I realized that when I do watch an episode, 8 times out of 10 it'll be an episode I've seen before. So I decided that I needed to diversify my MST-watching experience. It started out so earnestly, with The Crawling Eye, bits of which I was surprised to recognize. Turns out that the Freakazoid! episode "The Cloud" borrowed some plot elements from the movie (as well as copied the opening credits), except instead of a giant eye monster killing people, it was the villain The Lobe (voiced by David "Baydool/Vultare" Warner) turning people into clowns. However, after attempting Robot vs. the Aztec Mummy and Robot Holocaust, I found I couldn't continue watching Season 1. The movies are just too bad! I did make it through Mad Monster and Women of the Prehistoric Planet, but I found myself just not interested in the films, the riffing, the host segments - any of it! So I have moved on to Season 2, which I think I'm enjoying more. I've seen Rocketship X-M, Sidehackers, and I just finished Catalina Caper last night. I have a list of all the episodes (taken from mst3k.booyaka.com) so I can keep track of what episodes I've seen before, so I can make sure I only watch an episode I haven't seen before (which is easy right now, considering that before this experiment, I hadn't seen any of Seasons 1 or 2 at all). I'll keep updating on my quest as I go, but all told, it's been interesting to see the early days of my favorite TV show, and who knows? Maybe I'll get brave and go back to catch more of Season 1...

Project Moonbase and Untamed Youth are 2 of the better season 1 eps. But they are all generally a lot thinner on the laughs than later seasons.

I am a seriously nostalgic person, and I am in constant contact with my inner child. If there is something that I grew up loving, I don't ever want to forget it. I had a happy, uncomplicated childhood (not to mention I was a precocious little kid), and I think I like to hold on to the innocence...
So, last night, out of the blue (aka while I was trying to fall asleep), I started thinking about an old show from when I was a kid. It was called "Out of This World," and I'm sure all you 80s kids remember it. It was about a girl named Evie who was half-alien and could freeze time by touching her fingers together (and don't pretend you didn't try it yourself). Of course, the first thing I do is zoom to YouTube, because YouTube has everything. And lo and behold, there are at least 4 episodes of the show on YouTube! (There are also about 10 or so dubbed in German...) Needless to say, I didn't get much sleep last night. Words cannot describe how happy this makes me.
Because my mom taught me to share, here's the intro and theme song... now it can be stuck in your head all day, too!

Nice. And here I thought I knew all of the nifty weird shows from the 80s (a thought that, I admit, is about as hubris ridden as they come.)

As if the previous post didn't clue you all in, here's another post written by my inner child... the one who watched Animaniacs clips into the wee hours of the morning.
I went shopping for a new straightener today (mine is pretty worn out, but it is at least 3 years old), but Target didn't have the one I was looking for. They did, however, have "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? Treasures of Knowledge" on clearance for $10!
This version of "WITWICS?" is vastly different from the versions I played as a kid (I remember playing a version on my uncle's old Mac that had 8-bit graphics, and everything was that DOS green color), and the downside is that there are apparently only 8 mini-missions that you go on while trying to solve one big overarcing case. I think I've already solved at least 5. If I wanted to, I could have beat the entire game today. This is not fair. I need to find the old Deluxe version from the mid-90s (seems like that one had hundreds of possible cases), but the abandonware file I downloaded wouldn't work with Vista...
I guess this is what happens when a 24-year-old girl tries to play something aimed at ages 8 and up... The irony? Carmen Sandiego's where I got all my geography knowledge. Has the student finally surpassed the teacher?

Has the student finally surpassed the teacher? Yeah, I heard about that game. Broderbund was asked to make a more traditional game instead of their standard Carmen styled glory or something along those lines. My favorite of the Carmen games was a pretty particular version of "Where In Time is Carmen Sandiego?" It was fun, and had an Acme building that you could walk through. If anyone remembers the Carmen game where you could try over and over (with some successes and some failures) to get that coffee machine to work, then you probably know the version I'm talking about. -EDIT- How old is the game? Is it old enough that DOSBox might work? I don't know how good DOSBox is for Vista, but speaking as an XP user I think it's a great program.

No, it's cool. I meant hair straightener. Also known as a flatiron.

So I decided that I needed to diversify my MST-watching experience... I've often thought of doing this myself but have never actually done a full scale watching retrospective of the show from 00 - 1013. I did do a Gamera retrospective on a rainy Sunday once and watched four Gamera episodes back to back. I think I broke something inside my head. It took almost two years before I could watch one of those episodes again. I think we all have our favorite episodes and tend to gravitate towards those. I have to be in a funny mood to branch out and watch something I haven't seen in a while.
