The dubbed Sandy Frank version was (surprise surprise) a horribly butchered and badly-translated release. Apparently Sandy Frank's company lopped off an hour of material from the original, which goes a long way to explain why it's so damn incoherent.
There's at least two Russian (Ukrainian?) versions, one of which has redone effects and was edited by the director's son after the Soviet Union collapsed.

When i read that the Original was about 140 minutes, yeah made me curious what was hidden in that hour of cut out stuff- We might be able to see more special 'defects' viewing an actual high quality print...such as air bubbles in the 'space' scenes

The М-Фильм release (translation?!?) looks a lot better than then Twister release, that's for sure. Neither really look remastered, but the contrast and colors are a lot better on the М-Фильм disc, from the screenshots posted.

It's like there are blankets covering the Twister version.
