There have been some threads here about favorite TV shows but no one seems to know about SCTV. The Brains certainly did as there were many references over the years. They were obviously fans. I watched Code Name Diamondhead last night and Mike mentioned Sid Dithers, a charter Eugene Levy did. In the beginning of The Girl In Gold Boots Pearl pushes the film can at the camera. That's from Monster Chiller Horror Theater when they had Dr Tongue 3D movies. I know it doesn't make sense if you haven't seen it. And I think sometimes when there was an explosion in a movie someone would say "that blowed up real good". A reference to Farm Film Report where (impersonated) celebrates would talk to some farmer rubes and then blow up and they'd say "they blowed up real good". My description doesn’t sound funny but it really was. At least The Brains and I though so.

SCTV was a classic! So much talent came out of that show, SNL gets the press but SCTV was the better show IMHO.
Dr. Tongue and Count Floyd, ahh yes.
I remember the one title "Dr. Tongues house of 3-D pancakes". Poor Floyd's trying his best.. "Wooo, wasn't that, uh, scary kids, with the pancakes coming out of the screen.. uh, oh who am I kidding!"
Another skit I remember was John Candy's western "Yellow Belly", they did a Davy Crockett like song...
"Yellow, Yellow Belly, where you gonna run to now."

Yeah, SCTV was great. I'm too young to remember its original run, but I caught quite a few reruns on Nick at Nite years ago.
And you're right, the writers on the show (MST3K I mean) were clearly fans of the show. But that's not surprising.
Mighty Jack - SCTV better than SNL? For a few years, yeah. But it declined fairly quick, based on the episodes that I've seen. Then again, SNL has had it's sucky years too. If fact, I don't know how it survived the early 80's.

Yup, SCTV consistantly made me laugh. A lot more than SNL did.

Hi, all! Nice to be here! I just thought I'd add that in an episode featuring African jungle natives, ("Leech Woman", I think) Mike notices that the natives all have odd hair-styles and says: "It's a tribe of Earl Camenberts!" - a reference to the nerdy newsman played by Eugene Levy on SCTV.
Other MST riffs from SCTV I've noticed include:
"Hey, you hosers!" -Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas as Bob and Doug McKenzie
"We've got cabbage rolls and coffee!" -John Candy and Eugene Levy as the Shmenge Brothers "That seems odd, I must say!" -Martin Short as Ed Grimley
"I'm the guy with a snake on his face!" -John Candy as Harry of Harry's Sex Shop

I've never seen the show, but I'm aware of the "blowed up real good" reference. I think Weird Al used it in a song, that's where I first heard it....

Being a Canadian who was a young teenager when SCTV hit the airwaves, it was a show that couldn't be missed. It was almost a religious experience soaking in the brilliant wit. One thing I feel SCTV and MST3K have in common is that both shows reward you for being up on your pop culture references and basic general knowledge. Pretty well every SCTV fanatic I've come across also loves MST.

Pretty well every SCTV fanatic I've come across also loves MST. Thanks for bumping the thread ArtCrow. SCTV was so great, it was a ritualistic thing for me also. MST and SCTV are conceptually different but there is a common humor aspect.

I love SCTV as well. A few years ago, before NBC stuck Carson Daly in the 1:30 am slot, they used to run SCTV repeats at that time, and I was lucky enough to get a few on tape. They were an incredibly talented bunch. Their spoof of The Godfather still makes me laugh. I really hope they release a DVD of episodes some time. I've got another MST reference of SCTV. One of the bad guys in Space Mutiny had Ed Grimley-type hair, and that allowed the gang to get off a few "I must say" riffs. I enjoyed that quite a bit.

I've never heard of SCTV, I always here about good shows after they've been canceled or are in their final years; for some reason it always happens to me.
Oh, I was Exactly Two Months before MST3K debuted on KTMA.
