Bummer. My parents saw "Jaws" in the theater when it came out and that was one movie that they wouldn't let me see as a child. I read the book and when I got older, I did see the movie. Loved both the book and the movie. RIP.

The man who did to the seashore what Bloch and Hitchcock did to the shower. R.I.P.

I really didn't care for the book. Perhaps it was because I had seen the movie so often, I was expecting about the same story from the book. I don't want to give anything away, but what happens with Matt Hooper (the guy played by Richard Dreyfus) in the book really turned me off on the book. Neverthless, Jaws is IMHO the greatest horror film ever made (just ahead of An American Werewolf In London). I guess benchley's death is why they showed Jaws on the History Channel tonight.

I read several of Benchley's books when I was in the 5th or 6th grade: "Jaws," "The Deep," "The Island," "Girl from the Sea of Cortez," etc. For a kid just getting into reading more "adult novels," his stuff was the perfect fare. He will be missed.

The film was better, though Benchley certainly did a pretty good job with those shark attack descriptions. I'll never forget the opening swim/shark attack scene where the girl reaches down to feel her leg and can't find it (!). Awesome!

Well, there's the hat trick. I echo Shep's comment about 'Jaws' being one of the first 'adult' books I read. God Bless, Mr. Benchley Thank You.

RIP Mr Benchley I liked both the movie and book Jaws almost equally. But it can certainly be argued that the movie was as good as the book. Good stuff
