An all-purpose thread for the beacon of quality on American TV.
Who else regularly shows films starring William Powell or the Marx Brothers? Who else would do a month long celebration of Kurosawa? Who has a programing department so darn cool that in July they'll be showing La Belle et la Bete and King Kong as a double feature? The answer is TCM and we thank them for it. ;D

Love TCM. Perhaps most pertinent is they haven't jumped the shark or even come close (please take note of this AMC, A&E, ...).

TCM's great. I love their marathons and month-long tributes.
My only problem, though, and maybe it's just a local thing, is the occasional film breakup. The sound will be okay, but the image just fizzles for a minute and then goes back to normal. A minor complaint, though, because most of their programming is fabulous.

They really have a huge library of films, and rotate them very well.
This past Sunday night, the theme was Political Corruption. So what did they kick off with? Duck Soup.
Brilliant.
I also found a copy of Space Master X-7, a 50s sci-fi film that I have been looking for forever. TCM also published the latest Charlie Chan collection.

TCM should also be commended for being very responsive to its viewership. Two years ago, maybe in June thereabouts, I posted to their "Suggest a movie" page here. The movie I wanted to see was Kwaidan, a '60s Japanese ghost anthology that I couldn't find it for rent at any of my local video stores. So, what the heck, I posted on TCM's site, asking if they could show it on their station sometime... specifically around Halloween maybe? The weekend before Halloween TCM showed Kwaidan. Coincidence? What do you think?

^ I love Kwaidan. I need to read the book.
I regularly check their schedule and found out that Quatermass and the Pit will be showing on the 10th! It'll be under it's US title "Five Million Years to Earth." The Qautermass series, about a rocket expert who gets involved in alien invasion-type affairs, had no marquee value in the states, hence the title change.
I saw this on AMC when I was 12 and it scared the pants off me! I can't wait to see it again.
Another cool thing is the Laurel and Hardy stuff they'll be showing in the next few months. The superior Hal Roach produced films and shorts aren't currently avaliable on DVD over here so this is really cool for a new fan like me.
Aug 30: The shorts Another Fine Mess and Chickens Come Home and the films The Devil's Brother and Bohemian Girl
Sept 20: Way Out West
Sept 21: A Chump at Oxford and Saps at Sea
I'm really excited!

I'd have never seen Preston Sturges movies had I not found them here first, during one of my rare tv-owning phases. Also loved the old pirate movies--wayyyy better than modern ones.

Yet another case in point. A month or so back, I was kicking myself because I missed TCM's showing of Five Million Years to Earth. So once again, I posted on their board, asking maybe possibly kinda could they please rebroadcast my movie sometime around Halloween? Presto! www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title.jsp?stid=24796It's slated for Oct. 22 at 9:30. Coinky-dink? NOT!

^They showed the first Quatermass film a few years ago. I'd love for them to show all three of them back to back sometime.
TCM is going to rock this October: tons of horror and thriller flicks, with a month long salute to Hammer Horror!
Anyway, off to class, recording A Matter of Life and Death on TCM right now for later viewing!

Creeping Unknown, right? If memory serves, that was a Halloween TCM showing as well.

Get this...
TCM plays more Disney Films than The 'Disney' Channel has played lately!
