To reiterate the whole "most of Laurel and Hardy's best stuff isn't on DVD" thing: This January TCM is having a Hal Roach tribute, which includes a marathon of all 40 of L&H's sound shorts! They're showing a few of their films too.

i've really loved the old silent shorts, movies and docs on the birth of film and making movies TCM has been running this month. i've taped some of it - edison's early films, george melies, the series on movie moguls, etc. it's all been very interesting. and if you check the schedule, they are going to continue showing silent movies & shorts - featuring mary pickford, buster keaton, d.w. griffith, charlie chaplin and a few others. it's definitely worth checking out if you are into that.

^This seven part documentary they've been showing, Moguls and Movie Stars, is fantastic. I eagerly anticipate part 4 tomorrow.

Watched The Time Machine yesterday on TCM.
The special effects really are pretty good, but the movie is very VERY riffable, with extra points given to anyone avoiding obvious jokes about the heroine's name.

The Hal Roach tribute stars Tuesday night with 24 hours of Our Gang/The Little Rascals.

I look forward to the short featurettes, travelogues, and newsreels that were played before the movie, and the older, the better (exactly like the MST3K Shorts, but without the sparkling wit). I find them informative, sociologically interesting, and visually/artistically compelling.
Oh, and I'm a big fan of Marx Brothers movies, ever since I saw Duck Soup on PBS when I was 8.

I'm excited for the Laurel and Hardy marathon. It's going on my DVR and it's not leaving.

^I don't even have a DVR - and my DVD recorder konked out on me. Looks like my trusty VCR has to go on one last mission...

Six hours in and hilarity has ensued. Wish I could stay up for all 24 hours, but gotta go to bed sometime. I'll catch more of it tomorrow and watch what I missed later.
Goodnight Stan and Ollie!

In related Laurel and Hardy news: it seems the oft-delayed American L&H megaset including all of the Hal Roach talkie shorts and features (minus the few that ended up in the care of other rights holders and are already on DVD) is apparently coming later this year! Richard Bann, L& H expert, author, and commentatary track provider on the TCM Laurel and Hardy DVD, is apparently at work on the special features.
In TCM news: their new, revamped website sucks and is harder to navigate. Consulation: salute to atomic age monster flicks in June with Godzilla King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. Monster Zero, Rodan, and The H-Man!

^It was great always having a little summary and cast and crew list under the title while browsing through the schedule. Quite often you'd see a film you never heard of that starred an actor you like.
