OK falseprofit, I'll bite. What's your definition of rock and roll?

I'm gonna assume he's gonna point out Run DMC and Grandmaster Flash being in the HOF...

A question for all of you who complain about the HOF choices, if it were up to you just what stipulations would you implement to keep out your undesirables?

A question for all of you who complain about the HOF choices, if it were up to you just what stipulations would you implement to keep out your undesirables? This might sound like a stock answer, but to me, *anyone* who made *any* influence in music should be in the HOF...just because it says "Rock and Roll" in the title doesn't mean Run DMC should be excluded....they influenced music to a degree, so there ya go.

So lets include George Jones, because he influenced music? And while were at it, lets put Judas Priest in the jazz HOF.
The line for what constitutes rock and roll (or any genre) can be fuzzy, but there is a line. Just don't ask me to define it. I'd prefer just to bitch about it rather than come up with stipulations.

By that logic, Ludwig van Beethoven should be in because he was a massive influence on music, including a Chuck Berry song. I think this HoF's rationale is fine as it is: If it's descended from the R&B and blues that created rock and roll in the first place, it's eligible. Madonna and Run-DMC sure don't sound like Muddy Waters, but that's where they invariably come from.

I don't have a huge problem with who they've let in. I'm fine with the rap acts and some of the more obvious pop acts.
My problem is with who they keep out. Especially when it's clearly deserving groups (like Chicago or KISS or the B-52s) or an entire subgenre (progressive rock) that Jann Wenner arbitrarily keeps out or campaigns against because of his own bias.

Tom Waits getting in fantastic. My all-time favorite musical artist. Rock-N-Roll? Well, not exactly, but he definitely uses elements of rock--often with a dash of blues--in many of his songs ("Big In Japan", "Goin' Out West", "Hang On St. Christopher", "Heart Attack and Vine", "LowDown", etc.)
Also happy for the Beasties. Still a guilty pleasure. :-)

I'm really excited to see Waits get in as well. He may not be strict rock (of course, he's not strict anything, which is one of the best things about his music), but he's influenced a lot of musicians from every genre you can think of, so he deserves it.
I'm happy to see Dr. John get in as well, though I've never considered him a rock artist- I've always seen him as somewhere in between soul and jazz.

Congratulations Alice Cooper! A career that goes back to the late 60s - The guy has put together a body of work that continues to shine (Dirty Diamonds proved the old man still has it). Couldn't be happier to see one of my favorites get in. And there aint no debate. He's 100% rock and roll, baby! Here's an interview with him Rollingstone.com - and very exciting news, the surviving members of the original band are gonna play at the ceremony, and perhaps will tour again.
