Today's Satelite News reminded me that today was the anniversary of the first showing of Soultaker in 1999. I thought about the show a bit today for its 12th birthday, and I thought a bit about the gimmick of that season opener: Joel and Frank stepping back into the spotlight for a bit.
The rules of the show explicitly state that you shouldn't ask too many questions about how it all fits together, but I'm always intrigued by certain aspects of the canon. It's a mildly comforting thought to know that somewhere out there, TV's Frank is still chasing Joel down. Bit of a bummer that Joel didn't join the other guys in the theater for a segment, but I suppose they did what they felt was right (besides, he had important ship repairs to make.)
Had the show theoretically gone on for an 11th season (and beyond), do you think a similar episode where Dr. Forester came back would have been well received? I mean, on the one hand, he was stated to have been pretty thoroughly dead in season 8, murdered by Pearl when he started turning to mad science again (making it all the better when she decides to devote herself to science later in season 10 rather than just the good, old fashioned Super Villainy that she contented herself with in seasons 8 and 9.)
On the other hand, though, Frank was also dead after he ascended to Heaven with Torgo the White.
As MST3K is almost definitely the softest of soft sci-fi, I'm sure they could hand-wave some sort of explanation. Anything from his time as a star-baby imbuing him with a nigh-immortal soul that can regenerate a body to a secret stash of cloning machines he'd been working on in Deep 13 to an alternate universe Dr. F to "What? Mother told you she killed me? Mother, why would you do that?" "Well, you see,..."
Ultimately I'd enjoy seeing them give it a shot. It might not work as far as story goes, but I think it would have been fun.
