LOVE this set! Hats off to Shout Factory! ;D I've only watched Gamera vs Barugon, but has anyone else noticed ever-present vertical lines on the screen during the theater segments? The tin is much nicer than the one for the 20th Anniversary set. Absolutely. And this is the first time I've ever liked the cover art on a Shout! Factory set. I hope they come up with a new design for volume 22.

Yes. The vertical lines in the theater segments are present. They're also fairly prominent in the other Gamera movies. I've also noticed those lines in other MST3K DVD releases including Rhino eps like Ring of Terror (REALLY evident in that one), Pod People and Godzilla vs. Megalon. Usually they're a bit more faint. The darker a scene is the more visible those lines are and the early Gamera films have a lot of night scenes.
I don't know if that's an artifact from the original tapes or something from the digitization and encoding process to DVD.

Finally got my set, watched the first film, not sure when I’ll get to the others. GameraAs pablum pointed out – Just watched Gamera. Visuals and audio were great, but I did notice a couple little things. The part where Kenny is in bed with Servo and Joel doing a Damien impression and Joel says "Good riddance. Your passing is soon.". The portion where Joel says "Your passing is soon." has been cut from the episode. The other minor issue was the host segment where Mike is playing Gamera and talking to Godzilla on the phone. The Godzilla noises coming out of the phone that were in my home version were not on the DVD. Not having the Zilla growl is a bit of a bummer, it adds to the funny. Otherwise I only spotted 2 minor hiccups. Near the start when jet fighters square off, one blows up another and Tom says “And that’s just a warning” – the picture jumps (not on my original) And the same thing happens as the 20+ minute mark, when stalking reporter tells gal… “There’s something I wanted to tell you” Otherwise it looked good. I have no serious complaints about it. I liked the extras – MSTHour wrap and the cast remembering Gamera was fun. Mallon has a funny dry humor.

There's a couple more screen hiccups I picked up on.
At the end of Gamera vs. Barugon when Joel is doing his Star Trek Geordi La Forge impersonation with the air filter on his head the screen jumps. It also hiccups near the beginning of Gamera vs. Zigra when the kids and adults are in the boat watching the Zigra UFO go into the ocean. I'm sure I missed a few others.
The other thing I noticed was Gamera vs. Guiron has a bright picture. Unless you turn down the brightness with your DVD player or TV's settings, the shadowrama looks gray instead of black. Not horrible, but I'd always prefer not to have to tweak anything to watch a retail DVD.

Barugon Didn't care for the Chiodo brothers extra - at one point one of them says that they'd like to know what mishaps happened with the men inside the suit. Yeah, that would have been interesting. Too bad we couldn't have gotten someone with loads of trivia and history who could have shared info like that.
The episode looks good. At 101:38, after Tom says "That's a long gestation period", the screen jumps a bit. It's a minor thing.
There is a bit at around 48:10, when the woman gets knocked out - there is a line that crawls up the screen. But that was on my home copy as well.
Gaos The extra with August Ragone was much more informative (probably more so for those of us not steeped in Gamera history) It was just him talking and could have used some stills thrown in there (pics of the early mechandise, etc) but I enjoyed the info.
Picturewise this has around 4/5 screen jumps that are not on my home copy (as when Itchy is pulled into Ferris wheel), but these are minor and shouldn't cause too much upset.
The movie itself has a lot of defects -ala the burst of white scratches seen when Gamera tries to pull Gaos in water. A green bar and some lines in the picture seen towards the end... but all of these are on the broadcast version, so don't fret over them.
3 eps in and no serious defects that I can see. So far so good.

3 eps in and no serious defects that I can see. So far so good. Please tell me I'm not the only one with a dark bar (with a thin, bright, pulsating line atop it) at the bottom of the shadowrama. That, combined with the vertical lines on the screen, has rendered the Gaos disk totally unwatchable to me. I'll be sticking with my fan copy. Guiron also has a dark bar but it's mercifully less distracting. Yes. The vertical lines in the theater segments are present. They're also fairly prominent in the other Gamera movies. No; they're mostly transparent, uniform stripes that cover the whole screen, extending to the shadowrama and the aforementioned horizontal black bar on Gaos. I have no idea why their copies look so bad. They're a stark contrast to the pristine trailers.

^ On Gaos - I can see that on the bigger TV (I don't on the smaller one) - it's like the movie is showing through a crack at the bottom of the shadowrama. I've actually seen that on a few of my home copies when I watch on the newer TV (which are rectangled) - I don't see it when I watch it on the old square screen (which is what we had when MST was broadcast). After starting it on my big screen, I wound up watching most of Gaos in bed, on the old small TV where I didn't see the line. So it didn't get to be a distraction for me. Overall I was satisfied with Gaos. GuironMy favorite Gamera ep and it looks great. I didn’t spot a jump or tape hit or anything that wasn’t on my broadcast version. As for the brightness, the picture is bright, brighter than it looked on my home copy but not so bright that I had to adjust my set as you had to pablum. The seats were their normal black, not grayish. I ran it through both of my players/TVs just to see if that made a difference (it didn’t) – so I’m not sure what others are getting on that front. I love that we got the missing pieces from the MST Hour wraps. (which yes, has what looks like a quick tape hit at the start, but that’s about the only glitch)

Are you guys talking about scratches in the film print? Here's two visual examples. I photoshopped the green lines in the first images to highlight what I'm seeing. First example is Rhino's Ring of Terror DVD. Which I think is the most evident of the vertical line problem since its such a dark episode. The other is from Shout Factory's Gamera vs. Barugon DVD. These lines are most evident when actually seeing the episodes in motion. Edit: As of 9/1/11, Tinypic the image-host has re-compressed the JPGs you see below. They're now useless for comparison since all the detail has been removed. These lines aren't really there in DVDs from later seasons. Maybe its just the early seasons that are affected which means its the source tapes that have these lines. Please tell me I'm not the only one with a dark bar (with a thin, bright, pulsating line atop it) at the bottom of the shadowrama. That bar was actually there on my fan copy of the episode. It shows up more on the DVD because the brightness is a little higher. Adjust your display or DVD player settings and that should minimize it.

I've finally gotten thru all of the episodes in the Gamera box set.
Overall, I really enjoy the set. I'd seen three of the Gamera movies (Gamera, Guiron, Zigra) and I remember parts of Gaos but I don't recall seeing Barugon at all.
I used to love monster weeks on my local independant TV station but mostly I saw Godzilla, King Kong and giant bug movies so Gamera was new to me.
These movies take me back to those days and how fun they are to watch. I always get a kick out of the models that were used in these movies now but as I kid I always was impressed with how real looking they could make the scenes.
The extras were good but I do need to rewatch the Chiodo brothers one because I fell asleep and didn't really see a whole lot.
Now for some quick reviews of the episodes:
Gamera - I really enjoy Crow as Gamera with his "Kenny!" shouts like he's calling out for a lost love. A good episode overall.
Barugon - I really enjoyed the movie even thought there wasn't a lot of monster fights. A good episode
Gaos - I also enjoyed this movie but because of more monster fights. A very good episode.
Guiron - A goofy movie and I love the Richard Burton riffs. A very good episode.
Zigra - Another goofy movie with the yelling doctors and the goofy dolphin trainer. A solid episode.

Netflix has added all of the "Gamera" episodes via their streaming Watch Instantly service! Yay!
And FWIW, I hear that Gamera is really neat...

Love the GAMERA's! Both my copies of RING OF TERROR and GAMERA vs BARUGON don't have any such lines. Maybe it's my TV or Bluray player but no lines.
