...at the end of january on a work trip and I dunno if i'd have time to do this but if so, are there any MST3k-related meccas out there still standing that might be fun from a sight-seeing point of view? Is there anything to commemorate the old best brains studios or KTMA? anyone's private residence i could just sorta... park out in front of for a while? I'm curious.

Sneak into Jim's house when no one's home and look for the first 3 KTMA episodes. You'd be a hero amongst your fellow MSTies.

There's the Guthrie Theater, which I believe they've referenced a few times, where I believe Bill has had a couple of his plays performed.
Not a great connection, but still...

About half way down this page I have a few pictures of the Best Brains and KTMA Studios from a trip I made to Minneapolis a few years ago (although you may have visited this page before). Nothing really would tell you what they had once been. www.mst3ktemple.com/ctlivempls.html

BBI looks like it could be a Bank of America.

The last time I went into the Twin Cities, i drove over to the old BBI studios and on the way I passed the Perkins on 494.
Only true MSTies know why that's significant.

alas, i didn't get a rental car. One bit of instant mistiness, though: i saw my first Menard's commercial last night in the hotel! i got really excited, because they don't have Menard's in DC. then i saw about ten thousand more Menard's commercials in the next half hour and was less excited.

Do they still have the old guy doing those? I remember when he was supposed to retire in the late 90s and they replaced him with his daughter (note, I don't know if the woman was actually his daughter) and she did the same schtick. She dressed the same, wore a big pair of glasses and always ended her sales pitch with "AT MENARD'S!" After about a year or two of that, the old guy unretired and started doing the ads again. To link this story to MST3k, I lived in Minneapolis in the late 90's and the woman's Menard's commercials were very, very well represented in the local advertising on my tapes of the SciFi era episodes.

To link this story to MST3k, I lived in Minneapolis in the late 90's and the woman's Menard's commercials were very, very well represented in the local advertising on my tapes of the SciFi era episodes. Hilariously, because of this thread, I investigated the circumstances around the woman who replaced the Menard's guy, Ray Szmanda, in 1999, and it appears that the entire occasion has been completely deep-sixed. It's been wiped clean. There is literally no video of that woman, Kim Larsen, doing a Menard's commercial online, and I could only find one article that even mentions her replacing the "Menards Guy". I'm now seriously thinking about trying to upload some of my old MST3k videos online so that I will be the only person on the internet with any evidentiary proof that this thing even happened. The complete lack of any reference to this ad campaign is both hilarious and bizarrely Orwellian.
