The first Monkees album was very formative to me as a musician. As a kid, I used to sit at the piano and try to figure out the melodies and chords. "Saturday's Child" is still a favorite. I know they didn't write or play the songs on the records, but Davy & Mickey were two of the great pop vocalists of the '60s, and the music holds up very well. The show was great, too.
Here's hoping that Davy's death brings a renewed interest to their music and people get over the "manufactured-ness" of the band's origins. He was a great performer.
Somewhere, Marcia Brady is crying.

This is so sad. I watched The Monkees as a kid. Although Mike was my favorite, all the guys had charm. RIP.

This one hurts. The Monkees were a big part of my childhood. All the prefab stuff aside, they put out some really excellent music. RIP Davy.

Very sad to hear this news as well. As a small child in 60's-early 70's The Monkees were part of my Saturday mornings. Antenna TV (See thread in Franks TV) will air a Monkees marathon & the move Head this Saturday. Rest in Peace Davy, I hope that Marcia Brady is not crestfallen. corporate.tribune.com/pressroom/?p=3944

But who will take poor Marsha to her dance?
Monkees > Beetles. Oh yeah. I went there.

Jeez, another one that really hits me where I live. I grew up on The Monkees, always loved the show. Dug the humor and dug the tunes. Thanks for the great songs, Davy, and all the fun times.

I LOVE THAT SHOW! I remember watching it in the 80's as a kid on MTV! Who cares if they were originally pre-fab, they were a cool pop/rock group that made some great music & fantastic comedy! They eventually did prove to be a real band & eventually they did play their instruments (after a lot of conflict with the studio heads, of course).
RIP, little Daydream Believer! Now in that "Big Gig In The Sky" with Jim, Janis, John & George, Elvis, Jimi, Kurt, Syd & Ricky (shine on, guys), Cass, Whitney, Amy, Michael (ch'mone!), Randi, Ian, Bryan, Marvin, Buddy, Richie (LaBamba!), Keith (fiddle about), etc.
If there's a Rock & Roll Heaven, y'know the gotta HELL of a band!

Another part of my youth is gone. Rest in peace Davy, you were enjoyed. I think the first 4 Monkee albums were great and the show was a kick.

Sad news. I loved the Monkees when I was little (Peter was my favorite). Fun, zany show.
RIP Davy.
