Here is a thread where I encourage users to chime in about songs with particularly notable introductory segments.
Eagles - "One of These Nights"
It's difficult to describe the guitar effect that's used as the intro to this album's title track. Nevertheless, it's so unusual and so entertaining and it's a great way to lead into the main content of the song. It's blasphemous to think there might be variations of the track that exclude this intro.
Blackfoot - "Train, Train"
To be brutally honest, the only element that sets this track apart from the rest of the classic rock library is its brilliant intro which features a harmonica emulating the sound of an engine traveling down the railroad.
The Who - "Won't Get Fooled Again"
This is easily my favorite track by the Who and the synthesizer intro is definitely my favorite part of the song. It's particularly great that the song revisits the synthesizer one more time before closing out.

The first two songs I thought of in this context were the amazing wobbly guitar intro to The Smiths' "How Soon Is Now," and that great building bassline kicking off Joy Division's "Transmission."

I love a good intro, and can't argue with any of the above, especially the Smiths and Who. Baba O'Reilly, Pinball Wizard and the happy-go-lucky start to Girlfriend in a Coma could easily fit into the category as well.
Some of my favorites that came to mind:
Asia - Heat of the Moment
Nothing that special, but when I hear that guitar intro, I get a smile on my face. It's appearance in "The Matador" doesn't hurt.
Bon Jovi - Wanted Dead or Alive
The gradual guitar plucking building up to a western sting is a great way to start this song.
The Clash - most of their songs
They were good at this.
Clapton - ummm...
Again, I could go with many, but I think Derek and the Dominoes "Layla" has the best guitar intro of any hard, classic rock song. It's not long but it's iconic.
John Mellencamp - Jack and Diane
Just like Strongbad's song, it's all about the claps. As is often the case with Mellencamp, this one starts out with some defiant, angry guitar to set the tone. It's reminiscent of the piano of "Born in the USA", but I like Mellencamp a lot more than the Boss, so he gets the headline.

pink floyd's "echoes" pops right into my head, but maybe that's because i'm transfixed with single-note noncery at the moment. i've always loved the interminable super-high piano plinking that starts off that song.
i hope none of you smoke pot.

also, yes's "heart of the sunrise." the tune balls it up with this amazing syncopated instrumental hard-rock riff that the band goes off on for about four minutes. then the song starts and it's all mellow and jon anderson-y sing-song that's almost completely unlike what the intro just set you up for. it's brilliant songwriting.

"Chameleon" by Herbie Hancock is a good place to start. But for my money, the greatest intro- and the greatest riff ever written- in my opinion has to be "Use Me" by Bill Withers. It's simple, but it grooves harder than anything else out there and will never leave your head. Ever.

I hope this isn't to obvious, but the opening to "In The Evening" by Led Zeppelin IMO is a classic.

off the top of my head
pink floyd, "wish you were here" great acoustic guitar intro, which even beginners can replicate
not a big elton john fan, but I always liked the intro to "funeral for a friend" Very funereal.
the who, "pinball wizard" Love the succession of atypical chords. Townshend was such a young genius
cream, "sunshine of your love" another iconic clapton riff
speaking of clapton, love the intro to his/JJ cale's "last will and testament" this is one of my 25 favorite songs these days. music only here:

off the top of my head pink floyd, "wish you were here" great acoustic guitar intro, which even beginners can replicate I get mad when that comes on at random when I'm driving. It's so good, but you simply cannot hear it over the road noise, especially since I usually have the windows down. That fantastic intro is almost reduced to silence, and I can only tell the song by looking at the display. I just sigh and skip to the next song.

The intro to this song ALWAYS gives me chills, I don't know what instrument/effect is being used to get that sound but for some reason it almost gives me a rush of adrenaline. It makes me want to jump on a motorcycle and drive full speed to nowhere in particular; awesome, awesome song.
