Miami Connection (1987)
In Miami a group of ninjas attack a drug deal to shut down anyone doing business on their turf. Meanwhile, over in Orlando, FL a lame rock band called Dragon Sound with their leader Mark (Y.K. Kim) are apparently a threat to these biker ninjas, probably because they're a good influence on people with their cheesy 80's songs. A growing army of thugs continue to attack the band to make them leave town, but the whole band is made up of black belts in Tae Kwon Do, the one effective fighting style that can beat ninjas according to their song, "Against the Ninja." Finally the ninjas decide to take action themselves and it leads to a brutal showdown between highly-trained killers and a silly positive rock band of martial artists.
Every once in a while you find a bad movie that winds up being hilarious, this particular one brought to you by Drafthouse Films! Things get insane in a bunch of poorly choreographed fights with the band constantly getting menaced simply because they seem to be encouraging people to rock out instead of snorting cocaine - at least that's what I'm guessing. The performances are extremely bad to a point where it's just wacky. The subplot about the one guy in the band who's looking for his estranged father leads to a very silly dramatic scene.
Those are scenes that seem to be scripted. A lot of the rest of the film seems to be improvised, which leads to very awkward exchanges. A bunch of thugs try to sexually harass a woman in a gym and it winds up being so lame that it's hilarious. Another thing about the film is how it's hard to understand Kim when he's delivering his lines with his thick Korean accent so you have to turn on the subtitles option. The side effect of this is the descriptive subtitles popping up with weird descriptions of things happening onscreen. "(MILD EXPLOSION)"
It's all quite wacky and it winds up being a great bad movie with lots of unintentional laughs. Recommended for fans of MST3K-level bad cinema.
