Having recently rewatched both the MST3K movie and Diabolik, I got to wondering if a MST3K movie sequel is ever possible?
The major players of the series are still incredibly active in movie riffing, and as evidenced by the Shout Factory DVD releases and the popularity of the Rifftrax live shows there is still a large audience for MST3K.
I guess I've just really missed the characters: Mike, Joel, Crow, Tom, Gypsy, The Mads. Sure Rifftrax and Cinematic Titanic covers the movie riffing side of things, but the characters are equally (if not more) important to many and I'd think a one time reunion by way of a sequel would be fantastic.
I don't want to get all fanficy, but going by the end of the series, a second movie could go something like: We pick up 15 years after the crash of the SOL, seeing what Mike, Tom and Crow are up to. I could see the three of them having menial jobs, still living together as roommates and riffing on movies together after work. Pearl and Dr. F return (the writers are smart enough to figure out a way to revive Dr. F) and we could see the return of Joel as well. Really the whole movie is an excuse to revive the characters for one more hurrah and to do the unimaginable: Mike, Joel, Crow and Tom in a theater all at once. A four riffer experience! Maybe even have Crow switching voices (from Bill to Trace) for a stretch of the film, having corrupted his harddrive and having to briefly rely on an old backup.
As for the experiment, maybe something like Plan 9 From Outer Space or another big name b-movie?
I don't think a theatrical release would be in the cards, unless it was a one night Fathom event sort of thing. A direct to video or Netflix premiere would be a great way to release a movie sequel. Netflix isn't a stranger to reviving cult tv shows, Arrested Development is getting another season thanks to them. Who knows? Shout Factory, Best Brains and Netflix joining forces for another MST3K movie?
