That's right baby, I'm bloggin' up the ying yang. You made several points I would like to address spicy. Satellite radio is not killing small stations. That first blow started I believe during the Bush administration when the rules were changed allowing corporations to own more stations in a given market. That helped radio to become more corporated and homogenized and squeezed out a lot of small stations. But I can't listen to commercial radio anymore because of, well commercials. And even though I am of the classic rock generation there is just so much of it I will not tolerate. There just isn't a commercial radio format that I can take, SiriusXM comes a little closer but I could go on with complaints about that to, and later probably will. I'll continue with musical comments with you later spicy. I need breakfast. well, small, independently owned radio stations, like the one i work for can't compete. and we are struggling. i totally feel ya on not being able to tolerate commercials, though. truly - i hate them because they are EVERYwhere! we're tripping over them. i'm sick to death of them, too. but my problem is - that is what i do for a living. i write and produce local spots for radio, so how can i criticize what pays my rent? it's a pickle, for sure. and my complaint with most classic rock stations is this: they play the same two songs per artist/band and never waver. want to hear areosmith? all you'll ever get is walk this way and sweet emotion. pink floyd - another brick in the wall and comfortably numb. skynyrd - free bird and sweet home alabama. they're great songs, but enough already. i'd listen to more classic rock if they would delve a little deeper in the pile and throw in some titles that haven't seen airtime since they were released. /rant top of the second page, ma! made it!

i'd listen to more classic rock if they would delve a little deeper in the pile and throw in some titles that haven't seen airtime since they were released. Sirius has a station called Deep Tracks that does just that but the artists they play are still mired too heavily in conventional 70s classic rock. It's listenable to me though. I think I'll rant about conventional 70s classic rock more later.

You know what I hate? Polka and beans! I agree with both Phantom & Spice on the radio problem. The other thing I dislike about radio is the single edit versions of songs they play. Okay, I love BOC's "Don't Fear the Reaper" but can radio stations kindly play the version with the middle 16th please? Otherwise Buck Dharma's guitar feedback makes no sense during the last verses. I like that we've turned Phantom's blog into his complaint bar pt.2!

Bob Dylan is being given an award by France. I'm not sure if Dylan should be insulted or not.

This is the only station I listen to. And it makes me sad, since everything I listened to in high school is now played here. www.947wls.com/

I'm going to name names and I don't care who gets hurt. If I were to program a so called classic rock station these acts would be on the "Do Not Play" list. In no particular order and I know I'll forget some.
Journey Boston ELO ELP Yes Styx REO Speedwagon Kansas Eddie Money Billy Joel Elton John (except very early) Bob Seger Rush Yes Queen Moody Blues Gentle Giant Genesis Marshal Tucker Band Uriah Heap Renaissance Jefferson Starship Spooky Tooth Wishbone Ash Lynyrd Skynyrd Dave Matthews Band Van Halen The Doobie Brothers Chicago John Mellencamp
Of course I didn't mention acts like ABBA and Air Supply because they shouldn't even be considered for a rock station in the first place. I'll add more as they occur to me.

Okay.... so how about the bands you would HAVE to have on your classic rock station? Bands you would play every hour.

It's the anti-afriendlychicken list! Phantom's on a rampage! Someone stop him! Or add an artist to the list! Ok, I will. Bruce Springsteen. If he's the boss then...aw, you know the rest. And I agree on Rush. Every single place online that's about music has some Rush fan that jumps onto the comments section and proclaims Rush gods. I'm glad you like your band but no, they are not the greatest thing since cream cheese. I love Pink Floyd but they are not the greatest band ever and I would never proclaim them that anywhere. And no group can be played that started after 1980. Actually, even though I do like a few of those bands on your list I completely understand. Some of them are overplayed, some are (gag) corporate rock, some are overblown and hit mighty high pretentious levels, and one is Elton John after 1976...

god, yes. it's bizarre how elton john slowly morphed into a cranky, bloated woman who only sings disney songs.
queen, really? that was the only one that stung.
and wtf is spooky tooth? is that one of those bands that has a few songs that are more well known than their name? it's after five on a friday, so i'm now too lazy to google.

I knew I'd get some support and ruffle some feathers. Sorry spicy, I can't stand Queen, never could. Spooky Tooth was a forgettable '70s band that Sirius' Deep Tracks somehow wants me to remember. Sorry chicken, I like Springsteen. (conditionally) And I like a number of bands post 1980. Details forthcoming.
