In the scene in which Baba Yaga casts a spell that makes the trees come to life, and they surround Ivan and start shoving him back and forth, Servo says, “Oh, uh, they’ve got him in a hodie [sp?] ring.” “Hodie ring” seems like the perfect term for four or five guys forming a ring around another guy and pushing him back and forth between them. The funny thing is I’ve been doing a Google search on every form of “hodie/hody/hoedee ring” that I can think of, and nothing is coming up. I even looked up “running the gauntlet” (which is kind of similar) on Wikipedia, in the hopes that their “See Also” page might lead me in the right direction, but to no avail.
I’ve also checked numerous MST-related websites that elucidate more obscure references, but I haven’t been able to find one that discusses “hodie ring.”
The reason I’m asking is I’d like to use the term in an essay that I’m writing for a class, but I don’t know how to spell it or even precisely what it means. One of my classmates found “hodie” on Urban Dictionary. Let’s just say it refers to a man with a certain remarkable anatomical feature. Clearly, that’s not what Servo meant.
I’d appreciate any leads anyone could provide. Thanks in advance.
