"Theh-pew-may-men...its only you that I love..."
Shout has been pumping these out at a much faster rate than Rhino did, and yet it still feels like its been forever since the last set. I just want them all right now!
I probably won't get around to watching the episodes until later this week, as I have a group of friends who want the Pumaman experience and I'll be saving it for them. Didn't stop me from checking out the latest batch of extras!
Now without further delay..."Everything wiggles! GO CALYPSO GO!"
First off on the Untamed Youth disc is an intro by Joel. I was disappointed with it, as while he discusses why youth films were perfect for the show, he tangents into territory we've already heard a thousand times before. I would have prefered hearing more of the story that I believe was on the 20AE set where they claimed they were drinking a lot during the writing of this episode. Next is an interview with Mamie Van Doren. She talks about her career as a film sex symbol. Some of it is interesting, some of it isn't. Next is a brief featurette on Joel's one-man show Riffing Myself. Looks interesting. Wish he played in Idaho. Finally is a trailer to the movie.
Since I imagine there wasn't much to go on for Hercules and the Captive Women, this disc becomes a celebration of Steve Vance and his mini-posters for the show. Hell, even the menu is pretty much just his poster for this episode with a little bit of dialogue thrown in. Vance has a featyrette all to himself as he explains the creative process for the posters. It rounds intself out with a gallery of all his posters to date. Other than that there's another intro by Joel, this one better than the previous. He explains the real reason Gypsy was in the theater as well as his fondness for Hercules movies.
On the Thing That Couldn't Die there is a mini-doc called the Movie That Couldn't Die. This is hands down the most information I've ever heard on this movie. It makes me hope Shout's deal with Universal leads to their release of some of Universal's lesser known titles from the 30s, 40, and 50s through their Scream Factory label. Maybe there is some juicy info on those too. There's also a trailer for the movie.
Pumaman kicks off with the first un-MSTed copy of a movie since the early Rhino days. And since I think this is the first time Pumaman has EVER been on DVD, I think this is a major win for those who collect copies of these movies unriffed. I only skimmed it, but don't expect stellar quality. It's full screen and mildly washed out, and the end credits have a video and audio flaw. There might be more but I'd have to watch the whole thing. After that we have an interview with Pumaman himself, Walter G Alton Jr. he chronicles the movie the best he can (and his explaination for Pumaman's flailing in the air is interesting, he's supposed to be SWIMMING). For those wondering his opinion on the show, he said he found it offensive but appreciated the fact that it helped the movie find a new audience. Rounding out the set is a featurette on the Nanites.
This was a solid set of extrasfor a solid batch of episodes. Can't wait to watch them!
