There have been discussions about Joel vs Mike, Josh vs Kevin, and Trace vs Bill, but I bring to you Jim Mallon vs Patrick Brantseg and I am speaking of course of their capacity of performing Gypsy. Gypsy is a lot like Miss Piggy in the sense that you're never going to get past the fact that a man is performing her. But I've gotta go with Patrick; his pitch was much lower and natural and I feel that Jim was whinier and always went for a level that strained his voice.

Patrick's delivery was a little more "even" to me, and easier to understand, but Mallon had a bit more "character" -- performing in what's obviously an exaggerated comic falsetto, his voice cracking and ululating... though he was a bit hard to understand sometimes.
I didn't notice a really huge overall voice change, though, as when Murphy started voicing Servo, or when Corbett took over with Crow, or when Mary Jo started doing the Magic Voice.
If I had to pick one, I'd have to go with Patrick, as his delivery was a little "cleaner" and easier to understand.

I thought there was more of a "feminine" tone when Jim played Gypsy, while when Patrick did her it sounded like she was suffering from laryngitis.
Different strokes, different folks.

I *will* say that while all the other puppet voice changes in the series were pretty obvious to me, Gypsy's took me a while to notice for whatever reason. Not sure what that amounts to.

Yeah, to be honest I didn't notice much difference. It's hard not to overlook however how badly Gypsy was handled for the first couple of seasons until they decided to start giving her a personality. My favorite Gypsy acts tend to be from Jim Mallon's era, though. But that might simply be because there were so many more seasons of material to choose from.

Jim. But Patrick did such an excellent impersonation that for a while I didn't realize there was somebody else doing Gypsy's voice. Patrick was certainly a worthy Gerry to Jim's Bea.

I never noticed until I read about it in some online retrospective. The voice is such a stretch that one man mangling it doesn't sound all that different from another man mangling it.

I preferred Jim mainly because I thought Gypsy was always at her funniest when she was interacting with Joel. Their relationship was hilarious and strangely poignant.
I also kind of preferred when Gypsy was less articulate. There was something very lovable about it. Like in Lost Continent: "oh, Joel! Oh, Joel!" Patrick never tapped into that - but, he was totally fine. And truth be told, the difference between Jim and Patrick in the Mike era (where Gypsy was always the more articulate version) is almost indistinguishable.

Jim. I feel like Jim gave Gypsy a lot of character by late season 3 or early season 4. When Patrick voiced her, she just seemed kind of there - not like her seasons 1 through mid 3 self, but just there.

Although both are good I prefer Jim's version. I agree with what brandonakaxerxes said above, she does seem more feminine, and I also think she has more of the "mother hen" quality in her personality, especially during the Mike years. It's hard for me to picture Kevin's Gypsy having a one woman show or working so hard to rescue Joel.

Kevin never did the voice of Gypsy at all.

Kevin never did the voice of Gypsy at all. You're correct, but now I wonder how that would have turned out.

Why isn't Josh mentioned when it comes to Gypsy? Didn't he voice her during the KTMA days.

Why isn't Josh mentioned when it comes to Gypsy? Didn't he voice her during the KTMA days. Josh only voiced her by a technicality, which is different than leaving an impression, which he didn't. Also, his characterization was completely different. Josh's voice was just vocal inhalations, while both Jim and Patrick did a comic falsetto.
