He said something about the next 30 years, too. Or 60, I forget how many years exactly, he said. He was being all Dr. Who. Some eps, new host, some more eps, new host.

It does seem strange that MST3K will no longer be under the control of BBI. The only thing that really eases my mind is that Joel is apparently the point man for all of this, and I would assume he has at least some level of autonomous control. He is the creator and soul of the show, after all, and as much as I loved the later seasons after he left, it always seemed like something that belonged there was missing. Even if he's not on screen or in the writers room, it's still a good sign. As for the former cast not being involved, at least outside possible cameos, I guess time just moves on for everyone, and maybe it has to move on for the hard-core fan base as well. I'm ready, whatever the future may hold. Joel remarked on the former cast on the AMA: Full AMA is here: www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/3sbhp7/iam_joel_hodgson_of_mystery_science_theater_3000/Also, here's Mike's statement on Facebook:

Is it just me, or did Joel answer fewer questions this time than in the past?

Hmm. Mike's post wasn't very friendly was it. He even linked to rifftrax.com almost calling out that he didn't link to the MST3K kickstarter. I follow all three RiffTrax guys on twitter* and none of them have mentioned the reboot beyond stating that they're not part of it, and definitely haven't linked to it. I'm a little disappointed honestly.
I always thought a good deal of the 'bad blood' was in the imagination of fans, but I'm not so sure now.
(*and own most of their riffs and backed their (first two) kickstarters)

I have no idea who the new voice/puppeteer of Crow is, but I'm really loving him. His take is very similar to early Trace without being a copy or imitation.

It was Joel vs Mike for many years. Now prepare for, who do you like better, Joel, Mike or (the new guy)?

I'm getting some disconcerting chilly vibes from the Rifftrax guys on this whole thing. One would think their selling old MST3K episodes would make them at least FRIENDLY about it, but they're being borderline icey. Actively distancing themselves.
Very...perplexing.

The "hired gun" comment from Mike really bums me out.

The "hired gun" comment from Mike really bums me out. Weird that he disowns the show so much, but they splash "FROM THE STARS OF MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER" on their site and sell old episodes...

It's been clear for years there was some kind of schism among the Best Brains crew. The whole group has been very tight-lipped about who feels what about who and so forth, with the possible exception of some of the feelings about Mallon. I've compared it in the past to a mom and a dad whose marriage has essentially ended but they stay together and smile while the kids (fans) are around.
And you can read into a million things with this. Joel said he invited the "original cast" to participate. Is that the real original cast - Trace and Josh - or everyone that was involved in the original run of the show, which would include the Rifftrax guys?
The fact that since MST3K there's been two riffing projects buy former cast members - RT and CT - really should say something about it.
In the end, I'm not going to focus on any of that. Nothing anyone says is going to change the way that all sits now. What we've got is a new project by Joel and Shout! All we can do is concentrate on what we have, not what we don't.

I don't get the chill. I would think that a new MST3k would bring in new fans. New fans mean new people to sell RT to. Joel's only talking 12 eps a year. I don't put much into the fact that there were two riffing projects. There were two sets of hosts on the original MST3k. Having 7,8,9 different people hosting one show would not work.
It seems either personal or Mike has moved on and is sick of talking about it. You get that from a lot of actors from popular shows. Some actors want nothing to do with their previous shows and go out of their way not to discuss it. Some because they had issues, some because of typecasting and some for other reasons. I can think of several from Star Trek, and at least one from Doctor Who. It goes way back. I remember actors from Gilligans Island trying to distance themselves.
The thing I can't get is why not just play nice and try to milk it for as much money as you can? You don't have to go hug Joel or even be in the same room with him. Just make a business deal to cross promote.

On Twitter, Trace seems almost outright hostile about it. Saying that there WILL NOT even be so much as a cameo from him.
This is rather depressing.

I still don't think there's much of a rift. The Rifftrax guys just like having their own thing and don't want to seem stuck in the past.

I just skimmed his tweets and I don't see much hostile about it. If there is anything short about them I imagine it's probably from hundreds of tweets about the same thing hitting him at once. Especially since it looks like he's trying to advertise live appearances by him and Frank and probably doesn't really care what Joel is doing. As for the Rifftrax guys, I don't really see why they would be advertising a future competitor. They're happy with their own project and don't seem intent on ending it any time soon.
